Something I've been testing out recently is how good the missiles are at tracking with the radar in standby mode for a sneak attack. It seems very hit and miss and

I'm not sure if it's something i'm doing or not. I can point my nose at an aircraft, get the missile tone, uncage the seeker and give it a bit of a lead. about 50% of the time if i fire the missile (still with the correct tone) it just fires straight and doesn't seem to track at all. I know it can be done or should you always use a radar lock before firing?

AIM-9 doesnt interface w/ the Radar, it's Heat Seeking.

That's what i thought, however in the documentation and training it makes a point to show the radar locking procedures prior to missile launch. Or is this more just just making sure you're in range?

Exactly.

Guess i need to practice a bit more and see what is causing the seeker drop after launch

Be sure to HOLD the uncage button while firing.

Also as a side note.. I almost never use the radar for aim-9 kills.... you need to be close anyway.. so why let them know youre there...

Wait... Isn't the uncage seeker head a toggle type of thing where you press it once to uncage and twice to cage?

..or do you hold uncage when you fire and when you release the "uncage" it cages seeker head?
