Hello,

 

I have a question concerning the tetrapod, with my Mi-8 it's impossible to lift this load because it's too heavy.

In the mission editor impossible to change the weight of the tetrapod, is it normal ?

Here a screenshot of my mission editor, please can you tell me if with your Mi-8 you can lift your tetrapod ?

German Wikipedia states that they weight about 6 metric tons each. Not sure if lighter or heavier variants exists, but at least that weight roughly matches the weight in the mission editor.

 

Crates and barels ... who knows what they really contain and what they weight - so it makes sense to have those weights adjustable. But a tetrapod is a tetrapod - and it weights what it weights, I'd say. :-)

 

Maybe we will get a helo in the future that is capable of hauling them? Hrm ... :-)

Reduce your fuel load or remove any extras that are on the helicopter, it is possible to lift them..

This is broken and should not be possible. Cargo hook of Mi8 can lift around 3 tons max. So yeah chopper might lift it from ground. But on other hand it shoulkd break apart moment you try it :D

The 3 tons maximum doesn't mean that the cable/hook/hoist will snap as soon as you go over it. Every such limit accounts for manufacturing deficiencies, wear and tear (all within reason of course) but also quite a lot of dynamic forces that may act upon the system. The air isn't always smooth and pilots aren't always having a great day. I imagine it's quite possible that a new, perfectly maintained Mi-8 in ideal weather could lift even a few times the rated weight if the pilot was doing everything right... but there would be NO margin for error and it would put a lot of wear on the machine.

 

I think that the interesting question here is not whether the Mi-8's hook should survive such a load or not, but why do we have so many heavy loads available in the first place? There's no flyable helicopter in DCS at the moment that could lift some of the new cargos safely.

Absolutely right. I'm sure the hook has a designed load-factor limit of +0.5/+2 or something like that. It's typically part of the specifications.

 

As to the presence of other heavy loads, well, we can only hope... *cough* CH-53E *cough* CH-46 *cough* Mi-26 *cough*

I think that it's a real challenge to lift and drop with successful these heavy load and of course without enter into VRS.

There are two types of slingload systems for the Mi-8. One is rated at 3000kg, and the other is rated at 5000kg. 11023lb is equivalent to 5000kg. We'll just have to assume that we have the 5000kg system on this aircraft. However, as you've already seen, with an empty weight around 7200kg and an external load of 5000kg you don't have a lot of extra weight to spare for crew and fuel.
