AdurianJ Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 I found this article in a "Flygvapennytt" from 1972 talking about the development of the "high-tech" RB 05. It's on Page 24 in the PDF which i found on the aef.se website. Sadly it's in Swedish http://www.aef.se/Flygvapnet/Tidskrifter/FV_Nytt/Flygvapennytt_1972-4.pdf It's a bit of a puff-piece that mentions the stick is tailor made after input from pilots in its design. The Swedish air force has historically been at the forefront of ergonomics. The Missile is described as highly maneuverable and designed to be shot without first pointing the aircraft at the target.
Goblin Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 Nice find! :) I have tried the Rb05 simulator, and I can imagine that it would be really hard to hit a offset target... I mean, you need to see the target, and the missile. Then you need to steer that missile onto the target. That's hard enough if you fly straight at the target. Imagine if the target is offset, and you are also moving sideways, in relation to it..! Can't wait to test the Rb05 in DCS! ;)

EasyEB Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 I can only assume it will be easier with VR.
Goblin Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 I imagine someone who get's real good at using the RB05 will be able to pull off some crazy kills ! Yeah! Going to be fun learning how to deploy it! I'm going to use it air to air..! :)
AdurianJ Posted December 26, 2016 Author Posted December 26, 2016 Yeah! Going to be fun learning how to deploy it! I'm going to use it air to air..! :) Definite AWACS and HELO killer !
mattebubben Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 In before somebody starts to get air-air kills against F-15s and Su-27s by doing Off-Bore shots with the Rb 05 ^^.
Enduro14 Posted December 26, 2016 Posted December 26, 2016 so whats the actual ballistic range of this puppy? Or should i ask what is the range being limited to in DCS? Intel 8700k @5ghz, 32gb ram, 1080ti, Rift S
AdurianJ Posted December 26, 2016 Author Posted December 26, 2016 (edited) so whats the actual ballistic range of this puppy? Or should i ask what is the range being limited to in DCS? The Missile's battery last's for 24 seconds if the aircraft travel at Mach .75 the missile will reach it's maximum speed of Mach 1.5 after 5 seconds and the missile should be able to fly 11 km ! That's from the AJ 37 manual "del 2 kap 1" PDF page 68 Edited December 26, 2016 by AdurianJ

That's from the AJ 37 manual "del 2 kap 1" PDF page 68 Thank you very much that is a decent stand off range im thinking. This will be fun Intel 8700k @5ghz, 32gb ram, 1080ti, Rift S

That's from the AJ 37 manual "del 2 kap 1" PDF page 68 11km is very long one for rare targets that would otherwise keep you away. If you can typically get a 7-8km range, it is already a lot! i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.
AdurianJ Posted December 26, 2016 Author Posted December 26, 2016 I would probably say that the RB 05 is the best of any of the MCLOS missiles developed. The guidance controls for the pilot where rigorously evaluated for the best interface. A Liquid fuel engine was used in order to provide smokeless thrust to the missile. The Viggen had automatic autopilot takeover when a missile was launched so the Pilot didn't need to concentrate on flying. The missile also had numerous fusing options available in the cockpit. On the other hand the missile was delivered at about the same time that the AGM-65 and other smart weapons entered the scene !
