Andrew_McP Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 http://www.zianet.com/tedmorris/dg/bombers4.html Sorry if this page is old news. I'm not keeping a close eye on this forum any more. Andrew McP
SuperKungFu Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 yea it was mentioned here but thanks for some new pictures. Still can't believe how this happened. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 I saw a B-1B land at ED in 1989 after having a nose-gear failure. The flight crew did an awesome job setting her down. Great pics, Andrew! :D
hitman Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Yeah I posted this about a week or so ago...think it was Fudd that described exactly what happened.
Starlight Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 which "class mishap" does this thing belong to? damage to the B-1B at $7.9 million damage to the runway at $14,025 The aircraft was finally removed from the runway 4 days later huge economic damage, and one of the main nuclear deterrent airbases "crippled" if not closed for four days.... I don't think the pilots will ever fly again
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Well...its definitely a class A. :D Whether or not the flight crew flies again? Well...that depends on the outcome of the investigation. :smilewink:
hitman Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 If I read that article in the AirForce Weekly I think all the crew recieved was an NJP. I dont know exactly what the deal was with that but I do know it wasnt as severe as it should have been.
VapoR Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 You know, as far as strategic bombers go the B-1 is DAMN sexy!! I scoff at the idea of flying a hulking B-52 or similar but wouldn't pass at the controls of the B-1 . . .
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 OK...just read the story at acc.mil. The AC should definitely be offered a different career path in addition to his Article 15. The FO should also be offered the same path, since its very easy to make a visual verification of three green.
hitman Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 So they DID get an NJP? That figures. I get brig time for almost tossing someone off 3rd deck for stealing my SOG 90 200$ steak knife...and these guys get njp'ed.
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 An Article 15 can include, but isn't limited to, confinement. ;)
hitman Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Its probably different for officers than enlisted. One would think it would be more severe for officers than enlisted...but then again this reminds me of a time when one of our operators down on San Clemente Island a few years back who drove a 688 Scraper straight down the wrong side of the mountain...and the one who drove his 130G Grader over his M-16A2. I wont even forget about the other marine who went deep sea diving after his M-16 after he accidentally dropped it off the wharf there.
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Did any of those guys actually get Article 15s though? I have to ask...because both me and my bro got BTH drops for fairly minor infractions. Granted, our weapons were usually involved, but it was still a day or two of pretty harsh punishment by mother nature, followed by no official record. That stuff happened to LOTS of guys. The guys it didn't happen to? Well...they were superhuman, HAL9000 types of troops. :smilewink: BTW...we were both enlisted. Me...USAF...bro...USMC.
dynamocl Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Guys, on behalf of everyone else who browse the forum and who are not ex or serving US military personnel, can you explain "Artcle 15", NJP and BTH? Thanks.
hitman Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Well...there was this one time during MCT that one of our more "enlightened" privates accidentally leaving the range with a wet chamber..a lance coolie saw his port opened and shouted to him...said marine decided it would be a good time to point his rifle at a corporals feet and then BAM! A brief unload show clear straight from condition 1 to 4 in that corporals skivvies...a very scared PFC and one HIGHLY pissed off Staff Sergant later... No officers needed for THAT incident...everything went to the training pit for some not-so-friendly H2H excersizes. The others all were NJP'ed in the field..but it was pretty pointless since all we were really doing there was construction to some airfields and were working 17 hour shifts...for 8 weeks.
hitman Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 An Article 15 is an NJP- Non Judicial Punishment. AKA not a summary courts martial and usually carried out by the company commander or such. Id say BTH would be bitchout time in the head..but hes AirForce and thats navyspeak.
Guest IguanaKing Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Guys, on behalf of everyone else who browse the forum and who are not ex or serving US military personnel, can you explain "Artcle 15", NJP and BTH? Thanks. Article 15 and NJP (Non-Judicial Punishment) are pretty much the same thing, this gives your CO the latitude to punish you within UCMJ guidelines, and not have a Court Martial involved. This doesn't look good on your record, but its better than a Court Martial. A BTH drop is a Beyond The Horizon drop, usually from a helicopter, to punish a troop (in that line of work) for various, minor infractions which could have lead to the death of his squad. Depending on ocean currents, it can take anywhere from several hours to several days to reach land again. ;)
hitman Posted November 18, 2006 Posted November 18, 2006 Never had to do something like that before...but I was stuck with a shovel ( I forget what they were called...ACE?) and stuck outside in the hot cali sunin june for a good 12 hours digging a fighting hole with nothing but a gallon of water to quench the thirst. That was fun. Sure beat the hell outta getting my hands burned on the turbo's on the CAT's.
Hokum15 Posted November 19, 2006 Posted November 19, 2006 FOR SALE: BOMBER 1 CARELESS OWNER Ouch, looks like a tough bird to take that kind of punishment. Surely they had some idea things where not right when landing?
Andrew_McP Posted November 19, 2006 Author Posted November 19, 2006 Great pics, Andrew! :D I saw the link on rec.aviation.military and was surprised at the quality. Thought some of you might appreciate them. :-) However I do wonder if whoever took them was bending any rules by putting them on the web. I imagine if you were a smart cookie you could look at the damage, make a lot of educated guesses about the forces involved, and derive some information about the B-1B's structure. Still, it's an amazing aircraft even when wounded. I've never been a big fan of US aircraft aesthetics (give me a Russian or Swedish bird any time) but the B-1B is the exception that proves my rule. Such a sleek, powerful, profile, especially with wings swept back and moving fast. I just wish the flight sim genre had managed to throw up a B-1B sim before it ran out of steam. Andrew McP
