Mango Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 The mission where you have to rescue the downed Israeli pilot in the mountains is really busting my chops! 1) I cannot enter the LL coordinates of his radio beacon when they are given. If I remember correctly, they are 425016N (which I can enter fine as WP), and 423053E, which gives me CDU Input Error. Is there a problem with these coordinates or am I doing it wrong? 2) I can tune my ADF to his beacon and use the ADI roll bars to track it, but I never get the the horizontal bar which shows signal strength. How do I know if I'm going toward or away from the signal? 3) After firing missles and my GAU 8 at the same time, the gun jams and I can no longer fire. The DSMS page shows XXX-XX highlighted in red instead of the number of remaining rounds (I know I didn't empty my gun). Is this a scripted failure, did I overheat the gun, or am I doing it wrong? After all this, it seems that the downed pilot is killed/captured very early in the mission. Any tips on what I should be doing differently?
Yurgon Posted March 31, 2017 Posted March 31, 2017 1) I cannot enter the LL coordinates of his radio beacon when they are given. If I remember correctly, they are 425016N (which I can enter fine as WP), and 423053E, which gives me CDU Input Error. Is there a problem with these coordinates or am I doing it wrong? First, make sure the CDU waypoint page is in Latitude/Longitude and shows "LL" to the lower right (next to OSB 10 if you show the CDU repeater in the MFCD). As I recall it, the northing goes into the line next to OSB 17, and the easting goes to the line next to OSB 16. I think the easting requires a leading zero. So: - 425016, OSB 17 - 0423053, OSB 16 You should now have a more or less accurate waypoint. 2) I can tune my ADF to his beacon and use the ADI roll bars to track it, but I never get the the horizontal bar which shows signal strength. How do I know if I'm going toward or away from the signal? Unless I'm mistaken, ADF doesn't work in the A-10. In any case, it's most important to tune his freq so you can listen and talk to the pilot once you get in range. Not sure if firing gun and rockets at the same time is actually prohibited, though I don't see the tactical value. Anyway, when you get shot and your plane gets hit, even if just by small arms fire, the gun is often among the first systems to go, and the XXX indication means it's out of business until repaired, so no more BRRRRT for the remainder of the mission. ;)
Mango Posted March 31, 2017 Author Posted March 31, 2017 I was missing the leading 0 in the East LL. Thanks, I will try that tonight!
baltic_dragon Posted April 1, 2017 Posted April 1, 2017 The ADF works fine for UHF, it shows you direction on HSI but not the distance. As always thanks Yurgon for the answer! Mango Posted April 3, 2017 Author Posted April 3, 2017 Indeed, the leading 0 was the answer! Still failed the mission but at least not because of something I didn't know. Thanks, all.
