I have 32GB of ram. I can't imagine even needing a page file.

 

My SSD is only 240g, but I had the stutters when only DCS and windows was on it. That left me 175g free. I have more games on it now, but I still have 100g left free.

 

What I find confusing is I have no stutters when I click on the low setting button in DCS and don't touch any settings to change what the low setting sets. I'm getting over 200fps like that if I don't use vsync. No stutters with vsnc on or off.

 

I can adjust the textures to high so the cockpit isn't blurry and still no stutters. I adjusted the settings one at a time and took a test flight to see if I could pin point the problem. I used the F-15 figuring the faster speed might bring out the stutters faster. I flew high and close to the ground. Close to the ground brought out the stutters quicker. Putting terrain on high brought out stutters. High on water didn't. High traffic didn't. High draw did for sure. Without it, i'd get terrible pop ups and it was painful to look at.

 

I'm sure the problem is the terrain. I sort of gave up when I couldn't put any draw at all. I can't look at that.

 

I don't know if the Normandy map will be better or worse? The same goes for 2.0. I'm not going to spend money on DCS without knowing for sure. It's upsetting that I have to buy Nevada to try 2.0. Especially, when my goal is to use Normandy full time and I don't know if either one is going to work.

What is your nVidia driver version? (needing a data point).

I just uninstalled Geforce Experience but haven`t tested it in MP. In SP I have no problem at all.

 

Edit : I have tested it in Open Conflict server and it seem the stutter reduced to very minimal I barely noticed it, like millisecond stuttering. But I also changed my NVIDIA Vsync to adaptive and DCS Vsync to off.

BuzzU, have you tried disabling your page file? As you said, with 32Gb you don't need it, but Windows will still create one and will still use it, because it's a pig of an OS. (All and every versions). It's obvious that loading terrain textures into VRAM is proving troublesome on your system for some reason. I don't have that problem with less memory, a slower SSD and an older graphics card. I don't think its a hardware issue. It's probably related to Windows 10 and the 1060 not playing nice for some reason. I noticed Sharkbite also sports the 1060, and Windows 10.

 

Thats why I suggested turning off the page file and checking out what happens.

I turned it off. It was set at 5g. I still have stutters, but i'm working on the settings in DCS to get rid of them. It will take a bunch of flights at different settings to figure it out. If it can be figured out.

 

I di find out one thing that's kind of strange. It runs smoother with shadows set on high than it does with them set lower or even off. WTF?

Is there a way to pull a diagnostics log that we can send to the developers? Hopefully they can help out as well...

 

Not trying to put you guys (OnlyforDCS, javelina1, BuzzU, et al) down - I really appreciate you guys' help so far -, but just figured it will also be helpful ask the devs to look into this.

I've read for years about guys getting stutters. I'm sure they know about it. I have to wonder if their testers get stutters and just ignore them?

 

I'd gladly volunteer to be a tester to see if they can fix it.

Buzz and Sharkbait, have you purchased Nevada? I know the stable version of 1.5 seems the best to have, but it's running an outdated terrain technology. Nevada moved from T3 to T4 terrain (I think I have that naming correct). I get stutters and generally lower frame rates in 1.5, but Nevada is much better. I'd be doing my testing on Nevada if I were you, as the 'great unification' of 2.5 will take you in that direction anyway.

Thanks for the note hughlb! I have not tried it on Nevada. Frankly, I don't feel like spending additional money on this if there's a good chance that it won't work properly anyway. I might do what BuzzU did and send my logs too.

I used to have consistent unplayable stutters when I left V-sync OFF (in the in-game options),

and my NVIDIA settings are set to "let the program decide" or something of the sorts.

Turning it on lowered my FPS overall, but kept it more stable.

My problem is money. I'm an old guy trying to survive on an SS check. I had to take out a loan at the bank to buy my new system and TM Warthog. I'm very disappointed that my new system has the same stutters as my old system.

 

My original plan was to learn the A-10C which I bought. I don't feel the ambition to learn the plane when I have these stutters. The stutters don't seem as bad with the P-51 for some odd reason. So, I was thinking of getting the Normandy map when it comes out.

 

I don't know if I can get 2.5 woking without buying Nevada. It seems a waste to buy Nevada if i'm going to fly the WW2 planes. Nevada and Normandy will cost me $100. I won't spend that if I can't get rid of the stutters.

 

$100 will buy me a lot in IL2 BOS and it runs perfect. I think it looks better than DCS too. Plus, it's dedicated to WW2.

 

I'm not a quitter and I don't want to give up on DCS, but i'm very frustrated with it. I really wanted to challenge myself with the A-10C. I've grown tired of WW2 sims. I've got years in IL2.

DCS 1.5.6.4546.280 OpenBeta stutters and FPS drops

 

As I recognized similar issues with regularly stutters and short FPS drops I did follow some of the advices over here and could reduce stuttering to a minimum but not eliminate it completely.

 

These stutters and FPS drops occur on my normal gaming PC (Ivy i5 3570k @4.5 GHZ with 32 GB RAM, EVGA GTX 780 SC and Win 7 64bit) and on the laptop I did the short test video with:

 

Operating System: Windows 10 Pro 64-bit (10.0, Build 14393) (14393.rs1_release_sec.170327-1835)

Language: German (Regional Setting: German)

System Manufacturer: ASUSTeK COMPUTER INC.

System Model: G751JY

BIOS: G751JY.211

Processor: Intel® Core i7-4720HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz (8 CPUs), ~2.6GHz

Memory: 16384MB RAM

Available OS Memory: 16334MB RAM

Page File: 4232MB used, 14533MB available

 

Graphics card:

NVIDIA 980 M with 4 GB dedicated VRAM

 

DCS is run from the HDD, OS is on a SSD

My findings so far:

 

  • changing graphics details helps a lot with improving and stabilizing FPS (ALT+ENTER to switch to real full screen does a lot in this, too) but could not eliminate regular and stutters and FPS drops
  • setting all 4 physical CPU cores and disabling the virtual cores (HT) for DCS helped a lot in reducing stuttering and sudden FPS drops but couldn't eliminate them totally either (enabling this via the proposed autoexec.cfg seems to produce even better results than just setting the appropriate cores via Windows taskmanager)

 

My conclusion:

I think it has something to do with the loading of terrain or environment textures in DCS 1.5.x - will have to cross check, if this behaviour also happens in DCS Open Alpha 2.x with the Nevada map.

1st recognizable stutter is at approx min. 6:05 with FPS drop from ~60 down to 19 and back up to ~60 and another one at approx. min. 8:30 with FPS drop to ~30.

Sorry to necro an old thread, but with the release of 2.5, I've decided to try tackling this issue again (I had given up on this during the last 7 months).

 

I've had reason to believe that my PC has been slowing down because of an unhealthy SSD (e.g., high disk usage, unresponsiveness even though there are no applications running, problem persisting even after clean Windows installs, etc.). I currently have a PNY SSD but have just ordered a new Samsung Evo. I plan to switch out my old SSD and re-install everything (including DCS) from scratch using the new SSD. Will let you know if the problem goes away!
