60's Vietnam map (Real map resource/foundation)

So I found this source:

(yeah, wasn't that hard to find, but w/e :P )

As these maps exist they would probably make a good foundation for a 60's Vietnam map. Either full, or just north or south.

It's easy to see that the work would be a huge undertaking though, even with a good tool set in place from the start.

Just wanted to leave this somewhere on the forums so it could at least inspire someone with the resources and skills to make it. =)

+1 Nice find! :thumbup:

It is sorely needed, and it would be nice, covering the entire Vietnam landscape, including offshore for military amphibious transport, the whole Vietnam War theme for adventurous fun. Yes the whole entire MAP area might as well thats how it should be done and where you can set up great missions attacking all the historical targets and capture points that were in real war. It would make for years of fun and great for squadrons as well.

Having both north and south Vietnam in one map would be a very large map. I wouldn't mind a 2 part map, as separate modules, if needed.

A resource that is missing to make a good Vietnam map is a library of aerial photography over Vietnam. That would help a lot with getting the look and feel of the map correct.

Well for future proof I was thinking a Vietnam Theater Dynamic Campaign day 1, day 2, day 3.... each time you play it saves your success until all is wiped away, its a dream come true :smilewink: and years of fun.

Also thats how it was in real life the big massive attack across the whole stretch watch the history channel documentary shows how it was done.

(BTW) Yes I know how in real life it was played out but think of the strategy and long flights refueling, darn we need Phantoms ...........

The conflict was active for years and years. I don't really understand what "massive attack" you refer to, as there where many different campaigns, operations and engagements, by all sides. But no "attack" on both north and south Vietnam at the same time.

And the "Dynamic campaign" question for DCS is whole other topic ^^

There was a US front counter strike across the entire length on key strategic targets to obliterate the red force, but failed and it went on and on anyway besides the point read-up or watch the video doco it shows all, I'm not lying or something, again besides the point.

Large maps make realistic flight great for squads not 5min mission that are boring and you finish in no time then looking for something new.

If your looking at a Vietnam Theme do it right across the landscape create the necessary battlefield scenarios that were close to real life, such as CAS and air strikes on camp sites and ammunition depots all over the place and all the inland activity off carriers and ships.

It was huge military action and would make for good gaming.

C'mon be fair you know what I mean and I'm trying not to break any Forum Rules here by mentioning that other sim with large maps they have for realism.

Pfft... ....... where am I going with this LoL its not going to happen :cry:

Im thinking...where are the 3rd party map makers? Are they waiting for the tools and the merge?

And yes we need the F4 Phantom for starters. With the F4 and the Huey, i could be quite content in Vietnam.

The A6 would not hurt my feelings either, along with the AI bombers, vehicles etc. and equivalent opposition.

Would love to see it happen before I croak...time is running out! Ha...being a Vietnam era vet...this would mean alot for me.

Well look, I can't find the exact figure but loitering times were high on the battlefeild, again we are talking about a flight simulation not a ground infantry battalion like another game, where walking on foot to cap would suit a small map, anyway here is a link I found.

Just to be clear; You are aware of the fact that the action in south Vietnam was distinctly different from the action in North Vietnam? (same goes for Laos + Cambodia, for that matter)

Furthermore, I don't think the fidelity of the Laos and Cambodian parts need to be as high as in the Vietnam parts.

South needs to be high fidelity, because of all the helicopter action that took place there.

North needs higher fidelity as well because of all the low level flying (and bombing) that was done there.

Laos and Cambodia saw, AFAIK, most action around the Trail, so the higher fidelity could be restricted to those parts.

Glad I don't live where you live. In the U.S., the average life expectancy is about 79 years. It is even higher in the UK and Japan.

I am not up on the past history of 3rd party map making referenced above. I get lost in a hole whenever searching for anything specific in the forums. Not interested in the debate. But if such an entity exists, I would be willing to contribute my talents to the project.
