Hi,

I'm in a situation where I've got to re-format my computer and as I've now got my joystick's setting as I like them, I was wondering if there's anyway that I can back up my controls so that I can re-install them later, which are the files/folders that I need to save?

Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ian

In your users folder on c: you should have folder called saved games. In that you should have a folder called DCS. Copy the folder called Config in the DCS folder and restore it in the same place when you have reformatted. This should restore all settings in DCS including keymappings, views, track-ir settings etc. If you have 2.0 open alfa the folder DCS is called DCS Open Alfa instead and the same with Open Beta.

I also export the controlmappings from the controls tab in options in dcs as a precaution aswell.

Dont forget to copy other settings outside of DCS aswell like Trackir profiles, joystick controller profiles and maybe voiceattack profiles.

I just thought I'd add my tuppence worth, hope you don't mind.

So first do a full backup somewhere before you squeeze the trigger

I don't know about Win 8 or 10, perhaps others can help, in Win 7 there are some folders that are critical and it depends on the type of install you do. I ended up doing a format then a completely new install. If you don't then sometimes there can be issues.

You will almost certainly require a couple of vital folders the ones that I found I needed were

User/App Data (you may also need the Public/App Data too) this folder contains nearly all the program preferences for your programs (including TrackIR). First its a hidden folder so go to Control Panel then Appearance and Personalization, under Folder Options click on the Show Hidden Files option.

Most of the settings are in the sub folder Roaming, however also check the others (Local and Local Low). After you do your install, you reload TrackIR (for example) and after the fresh reload, go and copy your old TrackIR folder in the App Data/Roaming directory and all your settings shall be restored unto you. This process can be repeated for most (but not all) other applications too.

Next is if you want to get your old hardware drivers most of them are in the the Windows/System32 folder. Make sure you have that folder. After the clean install you can check in Device Manager for hardware problems and if necessary pointy pointy Windows to your old copy of System32, have the search subfolder option ticked and that should get you back most of your old drivers if you need them

Fisherman82 is spot on, however I just copied across the whole Saved Games directory and replaced it (I run the Beta and Alpha versions).

Next don't get me going about the complete and utter piece of nonsense that is StarForce (DCS copyright protection software) maybe its called StarFoce because it works flawlessly in a far off galaxy........it doesn't in mine. Cutting to the chase I had to burn an activation of every module as Starforce decided I had migrated. All I did was a fresh install of Win7 NO hardware changes...........in fact DCS was untouched as it resided on another drive separate from my system drive.

You may end up with reassigned addresses to your hardware, in which case after doing what Fisherman82 told you. When in DCS in a module under settings, configuration click in any box in the column of the device you want to reload a profile for, click load profile and point to relevant device (if its a particular module make sure you are in the correct subfolder for that module). DCS should then load it up and when you OK out of Config, it saves the latest copy and from then on your good to go

Good luck and apologies if I've been "teaching my granny how to suck eggs"

You get one activation back every 31 days. So unless you plan on reloading DCS more than 10 times in a month, it's really not a factor.

Close enough ... but not exact.

First 10 activation are not related to a time interval to be used. They could be done within 1 week or within 10 years. Don't forget you have 10 deactivation too... which are raising up to 20 installations, time agnostic also.

Only after you have consumed the above you will receive one activation per month.

It is not correct that one activation will be restored monthly while you still have few of them remaining.

It is also not precisely correct that you will receive one activation per month, after you use the the original ten.

Whenever your activation count reaches zero, and only then, after 31 days you will receive one new activation. You will not receive any additional activations until after use that one, which would return your activation count to zero and restart the 31 day clock.

Once you have used your original ten activations, your activation count will never rise above one.
