molevitch
Despite the mere crumbs of information from ED about the development of the Mi-24, I remain positively optimistic of its eventual arrival. I continue to acquire authentic components which seem to be as rare as hen's teeth. As many parts are shared with other Soviet airframes, I am able to use bits from Migs, Tupolevs, and other Mil aircraft. My main source is eBay, and the one or two sellers there through private communication. Sadly, some parts recently got lost by either the Russian or the British post office somewhere over the North sea.... I decided recently to upgrade to DCS-BIOS for these various instruments and controls and am following the video by Craig S and the work of Hansolo carefully. I am about to start assembling the network using Nanos and Megas as slaves and a Mega as Master. Wish me luck, fingers crossed. I am also therefore rebuilding the pit from scratch. The first was always a prototype, using mostly scrap MDF board leftover from building projects. I am now converting to aluminium sheet and have produced scale drawings from photographs, using my various authentic items as scale references. This has shown my original pit to be close, but about 5% smaller than the real thing, and also foreshortened. (Wondered why I was getting cramps in my calves...) Aluminium sheet for the left wall panels has been bought from eBay. It will make the whole structure less heavy too. I have made my first efforts in panel beating and bending too. A framework to support it all and installation of a better collective and custom built fuel valves will go a long way to completing the cockpit left wall. The blue colour is a bit too clean, and needs to be greener.... Edited March 17, 2019 by molevitch typo SCAN Intel Core i9 10850K "Comet Lake", 32GB DDR4, 10GB NVIDIA RTX 3080, HP Reverb G2. FragBum
V-nice work mol. Gotta ask you don't happen to have maybe 1 or 2 of these in the garage? :P:thumbup: Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment. TripRodriguez
Hot damn Mole, you are my pit-building hero at this point! My problem is I just can't see flying with a 2D display from a real cockpit now that we have VR. =( I think I'm going to try to bug report the (mostly right side) switches being activated by VR hands without clicking thing tonight. molevitch
Thanks Trip, the feeling is mutual! Currently my build has become an octopus.... There are so many parallel projects within it now. I have had limited time to work on it for a few months as I am redecorating our house. I still have had no success with networking DCS BIOS units. So I have put that aside for when I have time to concentrate exclusively on it. Current project, make a cast silicone gaiter/boot for the cyclic to hide the gimbal and protect the electronics in there. I must post about how I set up the trim hat with linear actuators to make that function. Very neat and compact, and I already use it in the gazelle and the Mi-8 (though it does not really have it, the 24 does). I will post some new pics in a day or two. Hotter than hell here today! TripRodriguez
Looking forward to seeing those projects. I posted a bug report a day or two ago and it's gotten no replies of any kind. Very disheartening. This is a serious issue that should be a pretty quick fix. No trigger press, no switch interaction.... is that so hard? I've revived my Huey motion pit thread now that the project is back underway. Since it's for VR it's very light on the cosmetics and details and doesn't involve working instruments or anything so it's on the fast track. I hope to have it fully operational and presentable by the end of summer. I seem to have lost my files for the pedestal panels but that's not a huge deal. molevitch
Cyclic Gaiter Here is my custom rubber gaiter for the base of my cyclic. My gimbal system was carefully measured and mocked up in plasticard and a piece of aluminium tubing. Then I sculped over that with oil based clay. I used a polyester moulding resin to make the mould and slush moulded the gaiter in black silicone. The shape is based on photos of Mi-24 cyclic gaiters, which have wider set convolutions on the left of the base, so asymetric deliberately. It serves to protect the Hall Sensor for the pitch axis as well as keeping crap out of the gimbal. SCAN Intel Core i9 10850K "Comet Lake", 32GB DDR4, 10GB NVIDIA RTX 3080, HP Reverb G2.
