Guest IguanaKing Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 With all of the buzz about Armed Assault, I went around on the internet seeing if there was a legitimate download that I could pay for. Although I understand that the German version is available this way, 42 Euros is a little rich for my blood, so I continued looking. In google, there are at least 2 hits that come up in blue at the top of the screen. I won't give links due to possible legal conflicts, but if you google "Armed Assault download" you'll see what I mean. They are claiming to have games available for LEGAL download, of which you can download as many as you wish, and only pay 20 bucks a month. First of all, I'm suspicious, since they don't allow you to verify that they have the game you want. Secondly, it seems a bit like a place like Netflix telling you its perfectly legal to rip and burn any DVD they send you and keep it forever. What do you guys think? Is it a scam? Illegal? Or both?
sp0nge Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 I choose... C) All of the above :D IMHO, don't bother with stuff like that. Can't trust them. Especially when they try to reassure you that they're legit more than twice :D Is breaking the laws of gravity illegal? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Witchking Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 personally.....first of all ...NEVER bother spending money in schemes like those. Unless you see it coming from a reputed place like ebgames or something like that. Second of all....42 euros is definately a bit too much converted to US dollars.....Just wait for the UK version to come out...hopefully it should be cheaper.......in the meanwhile....hop in the Su 25T and nail some tank a**. :) WHISPR | Intel I7 5930K | Nvidia GTX980 4GB GDDR5 | 16GB DDR4 | Intel 730 series 512GB SSD | Thrustmaster WARTHOG | CH Pro Pedals | TrackIR4 pro | |A-10C|BS2 |CA|P-51 MUSTANG|UH-1H HUEY|MI-8 MTV2 |FC3|F5E|M2000C|AJS-37|FW190|BF 109K|Mig21|A-10:SSC,EWC|L-39|NEVADA|
BeetleJuice Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 I also recommend getting a (patched?) UK version. I have the german version and that game is in a very bad shape, performance and bug wise.
ALDEGA Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Looks quite illegal, the site also appears to be using multiple brand logo's (NBC, CNN, MTV) without permission. One could say that Google is making money from illegally sold software ... Someone advertises through Google -> makes profit by selling illegal software -> uses profit to fund ads (Google).
Pilotasso Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Most likely Illegal, some pirates wanting to get some easy money it seems. .
Skopro_PL Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 I also recommend getting a (patched?) UK version. I have the german version and that game is in a very bad shape, performance and bug wise. well to answer that question there is a patch out for improving the performance and bug fixes, goto armedassault.org you'll see it there..there was especially something wrong with the german version, download the patch and you should be just fine.. Iguana, i wouldnt bother with those sites cause they're probably giving you a copy of the game without the proper cdkey to play online..also yeah i know 42 euros is alot, but if u think about it yeah u can wait for th uk version to come out( Q1 2007) and pay gos knows how many pounds for the game, might come out to be more expensive... also noted should be that you need a pretty nice rig to run it well, i can run it but at minimal settings , but then again im running a p4 2.53 with a 9500pro which is on the edge min specs for the game.. | 8700k @4.9 | Gigabyte Gaming 7 | 32gb Tridentz @3000 | EVGA 1080 TI SC2 | CV1 | VKB MCG PRO [sigpic]https://drive.google.com/file/d/1FeLGqKyJ3K08k3z-7XaegWgRuGRGkKUs/view?usp=sharing[/sigpic]
Guest IguanaKing Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Thanks for the responses, guys. I thought something looked fishy. I'll just buy it from a local retailer or maybe EBGames. On one of those sites, the first page said something about downloading old classics, so maybe that's what they're doing. They're charging people for hosting downloadable abandonware, which is perfectly legal AFAIK, just a bit of a scam, since other places do the same thing and simply ask "donate if you like the site". Pretty sad really, since they probably got those files from the free sites that simply request a donation. :(
ALDEGA Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 They're charging people for hosting downloadable abandonware, which is perfectly legal AFAIK, Abandonware is still illegal, AFAIK. Not being available in stores doesn't mean you have the right to download it ;)
Pilotasso Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Last time I checked they were not quite Illegal but rather not under legislation, because theres none for companies who no longer exist to claim the rights for the titles. .
Guest IguanaKing Posted December 10, 2006 Posted December 10, 2006 Yup, I concur with Pilotasso. Abandonware usually means nobody can claim any legal right to the software anymore.
ALDEGA Posted December 11, 2006 Posted December 11, 2006 In some cases, the developer / publisher no longer exists, but in many cases it does. Just check for (really) old EA titles on abandonware sites. Obviously EA is still here.
