Since F18 will be out soon I need to upgrade to a new rig.

What's the difference between the intel x99 chip and the less expensive versions?

Also...regular sad drive vs the m something or other?

What really matters if I'm going with a gtx 1080Ti?

Just don't want to make any expensive bad choices.

the 1080Ti is probably for 4K or VR. If you don't have any of these, I think the 1070 will be good enough or the 1080.

X99 is to run a SLI/CrossFire configuration to get the extra PCIe lanes, for the best (and expensive $$) performance.

X99 is useless for a single video card configuration.

X99 has a shabby RAM support, anything past 2400/2600MHz is pure luck and the CPUs for X99 are MORE CORES and LESS GHz as a rule of thumb.

 

Unless you plan on SLI along with other goodies inserted, use a gamers platform that supports FAST RAM, FAST CPU...and forget about X99.

 

X299 is about to come out soon anyway, you def. dont wanna buy a X99 now !!!

RAM support on the X299 may be a game changer as well as the 7740k CPU that also only has 4 cores and fast GHz specs...that might be the best rig soon money can buy for gaming.

 

The more RAM modules you play with the slower they have to be, x99 and X299 have a minimum of 4 to be used and max is 8. Z270 has 2 or 4 modules but they can be pretty fast and still boot and work. If the X299 has this capability remains to be seen, I doubt it.

On the other hand, quad channel at 2400MHz is as fast as a Dual channel at 4800MHz !!!

Just want the best flying experience with the most eye candy possible!

If you are plumping for a 1080Ti I would also suggest getting the i7-7700 K version so when you need it you can overclock to near 5Ghz.

 

If you don't desperately need a new rig now I would hold fire as there is possibility Intel Coffee Lake (replacement for current Kabylake) could be out and they may offer same excellent level of IPC performance but with 6 cores to compete with Ryzen 5 1600/1600x CPU's.

Absolutely, get the "K" version !

 

My pick would be an Asus motherboard but that is all up to you ;)

 

...and maybe you also want some faster than standard RAM, if you want, as you say, the best possible "eye candy" you need to come with the best possible hardware performance as well.
