Red Squirrel Posted July 29, 2017 Posted July 29, 2017 Hi Guys, sorry to bother you but I seem to have made a stupid mistake... I noticed that when starting dcs (world as well as open alpha) I don´t get the message "searching for updates" any more and actually I´m missing the latest version (I have 1.5.6.5199 and 2.1.1.6837 so there should have been an update). Did some googleing and landed on http://updates.digitalcombatsimulator.com/ where it says that in case your updater goes corrupt, download the new one here. So I did and then without further inquiries I extracted the updater to Desktop and double clicked it. It actually started to work, copied some 30000 files (thats were I began to feel uneasey) and downloaded an update. And all of a sudden a dozend folders began to pop up on my Desktop; what the updater obviously did, was to create a copy of Open Alpha on my Desktop, that however wouldn´t run. Some more googleing revealed this guide https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=114030 on the use of the updater, which I quite frankly do not understand. My "old" versions (stored under "Programms") luckily still seem to work. I don´t want to mess up things any further, thus my questions: Can I just delete the new folders on the Desktop and continue playing with the old instances or do I have to do some "official" uninstalling routine? And is there really no easier way to repair the automatic updates function than this command line routine in the guide (which really scares my, especially as in the very beginning it says that inappropriate use of the updater can corrupt the whole Installation)? If the automatic update can´t be fixed easily can I take the chicken line by just manually updating if I go to the DCS World Updates Page (on which I found the updater) an klick on "Download free installer"? Thank you so much!!
Red Squirrel Posted August 6, 2017 Author Posted August 6, 2017 After a week with no reply, my hopes are sinking...Really no-one out there having a tip for me (although I understand, that updating to 1.5.7 at the moment is not a really good idea)? If I used the Forum wrong (stupid questions, wrong thread etc.) pls give a newbee a break and tell me so I can do better next time... Thanks al lot!
Johnny_Rico Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 1.5.6 is much better (less bugs than 1.5.7) Just stick with it (unless you want multiplayer) METAR weather for DCS World missions Guide to help out new DCS MOOSE Users -> HERE Havoc Company Dedicated server info Connect IP: 94.23.215.203 SRS enabled - freqs - Main = 243, A2A = 244, A2G = 245 Please contact me HERE if you have any server feedback or METAR issues/requests
cthulhu68 Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 I'd delete what's on desktop and try updating with the updater app found under Start Menu / Eagle Dynamics. Then do a Repair if there's any issues.
Chief1942 Posted August 6, 2017 Posted August 6, 2017 If it was me I would delete those folders on your desktop and then download Skate Zilla's DCS Updater Utility. As with anything, read the instructions. I appreciate that it is not an official ED app, but it has certainly made my life easier with updates, repairs, and cleaning things up. I owe him a great debt as I often struggled with trying to stay current with all the updates and changes. After much frustration, I actually gave up on JSGME and the use of any mods. I'll wait for the "merge" and then see where we go. Good luck!
