I was wondering...

There are and have been so many great realworld F/A-18A liveries and paint schemes it would be terrific if we had a proper external model for those repaints.

I would love to tackle those in the future, it would be ubercool if sometime in the future of the DCS: F/A-18C an external model for the F/A-18A could be provided. I know it would not exactly fit with the cockpit and systems, but from the outside it just looked like the A-model.

Being a big fan of the CF-18, and I would love to create repaints for the CF-18's of the late 80's and early 90's when they were based in Europe/Germany.

It would be nice to have ALL external models for non-flyable aircraft in DCS updated to the 21st century (some of them still look like they were copy/pasted from the Flanker 2.0 days). The amount of detail on the WW2 assets is so nice, but I wish we would have gotten it first for existing DCS aircraft.

Thanks guys for your feedback!

I maybe wasn't clear enough in my initial post. I was wondering if in the future ED might provide an external F/A-18A model for the flyable F/A-18C module?

Surely it would be too far of a stretch to ask for a full A-version external and internal -> too much work involved.

An external F/A-18A model combined with the internals (systems, cockpit,...) of the F/A-18C flyable module would not exactly be 100% realistic, however it would provide a flyable A-model with the least amount of work involved...

The changes required to make an A-model out of the C are not too many. Eliminate the additional antenna bumps on the forward fuselage, spine and vertical tails, exchange the back-swept UHF antennas below the fuselage and on the spine with straight versions, remove the bird slicers on the nose, burner cans could stay the same (F/A-18A's started using the newer engines a few years after entering service). There are other subtle differences (e.g. narrower canopy frame), but they are not too obvious and could be left as they are.

And then we could paint away all those good F/A-18A liveries!

Never would anything like that become part of the DCS World and be released as an official module.

I believe it is possible to modify the required files to get such results, except for the interior and exterior model as we have no access to modify these I think.

But again it is very unlikely ED or any 3rd party developer would provide the A model to fly it with the C variant.
