There are two commonly shown video's of Tomcat's during catastophic engine failure. One you may have seen in a TV program called Carrier: Fortress at Sea, and the other is a common internet video. http://www.metacafe.com/watch/32209/f_14_explosion/.

I am unable to summon a copy of the Fortress at Sea crash, but if you watch the Discovery Channel enough, you will be sure to catch it.:D Both of these crashes are attributed to compressor stalls on Alpha model Tomcats. I believe Groove is speaking about the one in the video above. This was in fact an explosion due to an engine stall. They were doing a near supersonic flyby of the USS John Paul Jones, an Arleigh-Burke class destroyer.

Isn't F-14 nick named ''Hangar-queen''?

There are numerous aircraft called "hanger queens". It is usually given to a specific aircraft within a squadron that has constant ailments. This term was never limited to one jet, or specifically the F-14.

The F-14 which "exploded" midair after this low-pass of the Carrier didnt exploded at all. The frame was worn out and it simply tore apart when the pilot put some Gs after the pass to gain altitude. Both crewman survived the incident.

Oh so the giant FIREBALL followed by trails of black smoke as CHUNKS of F14 made their way towards the water wasn't an "explosion"? :smartass:

Did the pilot just burp or something?

Point is the Tomcat exploded and now its retired and the SuperHornet is next in line...kitty fur lining the bottom of the ocean notwithstanding.

Aww man I am really tired of telling people this. Yes it was an explosion because some wires were in bad conditions, caused an internal fire, reached the fuel tank and exploded once it was pushed under pressure (G forces). No it wasnt the TF-30's blowing up, it was a few bad wires. The pilot was aware of the problem when he began getting numerous fire warnings and eventually knew it was going to blow up, why do you think him and his RIO punch out under the G's during pulling up. He knew it was gonna be a matter of time once it did go, so he probably just wanted to give the crew a show but also make them think they are Ok.

So...he decided to fly it with a known fire, all while making a low, hi-speed, close pass by a DDG with people out on the deck just to show off before punching out? :megalol: Of course, I don't buy a compressor stall causing an explosion either.

Where did you get your info? If you can find some compelling evidence that it wasn't a compressor stall, I will happliy bow out. I personally think you are talking out of your butt again.

I wonder why the wires had power on them long enough to cause a fire. Why didn't the breakers pop? They do so almost immediately to keep the wire from starting a fire. Besides, the wires are Tefzel, so they don't support a flame anyway. :D
