Activate G-SYNC

Hi,

 

I now have a DELL S2716DG 27" 2560 x 1440 @ 144Hz G-SYNC connected to a GTX 1080 through a DisplayPort cable.

 

My drivers are 385.69

 

 

 

After reading tutorials, I did the following to turn on G-SYNC:

 

Nvidia Control Panel

 

1) Display > Set-up GSYNC

 

 

2) 3D Settings > Manage 3D settings > Vsync : here I should have a G-SYNC option in the dropdown menu but there is none?

 

 

Is my G-SYNC active?

 

Please note that the OSD menu of the monitor says: Resolution: 2560 x 1440, 144Hz G-SYNC Mode

We share the same monitor.

Easy way to check:

- Click twice on the 3rd button from the left under the bottom right hand corner of your monitor (close to the power switch).

- You'll see the resolution listed and if G-Sync is enabled, it'll tell you

The third button of the monitor says: Resolution: 2560 x 1440, 144Hz G-SYNC Mode.

 

So I think it's OK.

 

Do you have a G-SYNC option in Nvidia Control Panel > Manage 3D Settings > Vsync?

 

I'm glad we have the same monitor :)

 

When did you buy yours and do you know which revision it is? That information is normally printed on the box near the bar code.

 

I just got mine on Amazon and bad luck the revision is REV01 (old stock). Latest revision is REV04.

 

But on the other hand all seems OK so far, no dead pixel or whatever.

IIRC you have to turn on Vsync too, otherwise it doesn't work. Or atleast that's what I've read.. I don't recall ever trying without Vsync, so now I'm curious. I have the Predator, but it should work the same.

No ! wrong ! At least not with my Gsync screen and Nvidia 980GTX

Doesnt your monitor have an indicator LED that shows if Gsync is On or Off ? Mine has such a LED with 3 colors, : Gsync On - Gsync Off - ULMB

I will ELI5 this.

In Nvidia Control Panel, you have the option to choose between Gsync, ULMB, and Fixed Refresh. Forget ULMB for this, you have Gsync or Fixed Refresh (Vsync).

At the bottom for Vertical Synchronization, think of this as "FPS Cap or No FPS Cap". If you select Gsync above, here you have On or Off. So, On will enable a FPS cap at the hz your monitor currently uses (mine has 60/120/144 hz switch). Above this cap, Gsync will turn off and Vsync will replace it. If you select Off here, then there will be no FPS cap and you will get tearing above your current hz.

If instead of Gsync you select Fixed Refresh, then down at the bottom, Vertical Synchronization will have the usual Vsync options (On, Off, Adaptive, Adaptive Half, Use 3d application).

So basically, Gsync + On or Off is probably your main question. I would say Gsync + On if you can't stand tearing. Otherwise, Off. Then Gsync will work up to your monitor refresh, but you will get tearing whenever you go above that.

If your frame rate reaches the top of the G-sync window, like 144hz, it turns on V-SYNC. The monitor can't refresh any faster than that, so to prevent tearing it turns it on. Once it drops back into the window, V-SYNC should turn back off and the monitor will refresh when the GPU tells it to again instead of the other way around (V-Sync). They've added options since release that allows you to completely turn off the V-SYNC part of G-Sync, but you'll get tearing when you leave the the upper window. However, it would also eliminate the latency (or whatever it would be called in this situation) that v-sync causes.

Pretty sure that's how it works, but I may have misunderstood it somewhere along the line.

Unless you often exceed 144Hz, or 100Hz, whatever your Gsync screen can push, leave it OFF I guess to skip the Vsync function and save some milliseconds in response time :thumbup: :book:

So it looks like my G-Sync is working. I am just wondering why I don't have a "G-Sync" option in the V-Sync dropdown menu of the Nvidia Control Panel, as seen in tutorials. But maybe it is because of the drivers version or maybe the version of the Nvidia Control Panel.

 

Regarding V-Sync: I have it OFF in DCS and in other games settings. I have it also OFF in Nvidia Control Panel. For me it makes sense because VSync and G-Sync are two different technologies for more or less the same purpose. So for me it is one or the another and not two at the same time.

V-sync doesn't effect g-sync... they're unrelated...

 

v-sync is a confusing way of saying framerate limiter

 

G-sync is a chip in the monitor that makes sure only full frames get displayed on the screen regardless of framerates.
