Go figure!! :D Darf ich noch etwas hinzufuegen: German is the main language of about 90-95 million people in Europe (as of 2004), or 13.3% of all Europeans, being the second most spoken native language in Europe after Russian, above French (66.5 million speakers in 2004) and English (64.2 million speakers in 2004). German is the third most taught foreign language worldwide, also in the United States (after Spanish and French); it is the second most known foreign language in the EU (after English; see [1]) It is one of the official languages of the European Union, and one of the three working languages of the European Commission, along with English and French. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_language English is a West Germanic language that developed from Old English, the language of the Anglo-Saxons. FrankTheSpank Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 you just said "they hate us for our salame" o.O  You mean "lingua"? errr... I mean this stuff: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lingui%C3%A7a Must be the Americanized version of the word, it's what everyone here (Northern California) calls it, at least when they are speaking English, when they speak Portuguese it's so accented I can't understand ANYTHING. There are a fair amount of Portuguese here in Northern CA, we even have clubs that have Festas and parades: And even bullfights! They are "bloodless", the spears are velcro tipped (notice the velcro patch on the bulls shoulders) :) [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Alfa Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 They are "bloddless".... Heh......looking at that picture it seems someone forgot to tell the bull :D Cheers, - JJ. JJ

urze Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Heh......looking at that picture it seems someone forgot to tell the bull :D Cheers, - JJ. ...and I think that they can miss their target. And the bull also know this. Leftside Limited - ideas and solutions
Pilotasso Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 Bullfighting, an old tradition that didn vanish, not that I would miss it. A bit backwards for todays standards...The bull doesnt die in the arena anymore but sometimes the fighters do. Worst part is that theres women doing this now, and it just hurts to see it because you spend most of the time wishing her to survive her time and get the hell out of there. Sometimes its downright hilarious how dumb humans can be: .
Alfa Posted January 10, 2007 Posted January 10, 2007 English is a West Germanic language that developed from Old English, the language of the Anglo-Saxons. English, having its major roots in Germanic languages, derives most of its grammar from Old English, although a Celtic substratal influence has also been postulated. The English language is, as the people of Britain, the result of a melting pot of different influences - originally Celtic, but influenced by varies outsiders: * the Romans - no explanation necessary. * Saxons - a tribe originating from an area that includes Saxony(Germany), southern Jutland(Denmark) and north eastern part of the Netherlands. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saxons * Angles - a tribe originating from southern Jutland http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angles * Danes("Vikings") http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vikings * Normans http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normans When the Normans invaded England, they refered to the "native" people as "Anglo-Saxons" - i.e. a common term for Angles and Saxons although these were in fact themselves previous invaders. Funny enough the Normans too were ancestors of Vikings(hence the name "norman" from "norse men") settling in, what is now, Northern France. BTW the history of France is quite similar in many respects - originally Celtic, invaded by Romans and later influenced by Germanic tribes(e.g. the "Franks") and Vikings(in Normandy). Anyway, you will find lots of French(spoken by the Normans) in the English language as well, just as I can recognise lots of words in English which are similar to modern Danish words....and far more if including ancient ones that aren't spoken anymore. - JJ. nscode Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 We say: Govori srpski, da te ceo svet razume! or Speak Serbian, so that the whole world can understand you and it's true... no matter how much I wanted to practise my English when I was in Greece last year, people answered in Serbian :) One guy in Thessaloniki was even current in our local political scandals of that time. :D Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

Rolim Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 and since when is Brazil in Europe? :D golfsierra2 was talking about the importance of the german language based on the number of people who talk in german. His number is based on only one continent, but could be surpassed by only one country (not to mention China and Japan also). The importance of a language resides in its commercial value, how much it exports/imports. This is why we talk in english here in this forum. Number of people talking the same language, as exposed before, is important also, but 95 million is a low number, compared with other languages, portuguese included. About the text in portuguese, it wasn't the first time that another language was used in this forum, and I used it to made a personal invitation to Pilotasso, for him participate in our brazilian foruns also. There isn't any reference to others members of the lockon forum in that text. A person with his experience would be of great contribuition for the brazilians newbies (or newbee, I don't remeber now). You are welcome also. http://www.falcoesdanoite.com.br/ And I believe that is better to continue talking in english in this forum. Best Regards Rolim [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Core 2 Quad Q9550 2.83 GHz; Intel Board DG41RQ; Sparkle GF 9800 GT 1 GB DDR3; 2 x Kingston KVR800D2N6/2G 2 GB DDR2 800; Samsung SyncMaster T240M LCD; Samsung HD502HI 500GB 5400rpm; Samsung CDDVDW SH-S223C; eXtream X-Raptor 650W FEX-65P14HE; Leadership Commander 6731; Clone Cobra 01654; Leadership Twin Turbo 1021;D-LINK DWA 510; WISE RJAC-323 Black Piano; Zalman ZM-F3 LED 120 mm; Windows 7 HP 64.
Pilotasso Posted January 11, 2007 Posted January 11, 2007 you have to read between GolfSierra's lines. He didnt want to say it for polighteness but the 98 million people in europe speaking german generaly have a much higher living standards, as for many Portuguese speaking countries inhabitants never seen a PC or a DVD video in their lives due to their development status. Poverty in german speaking countries is virtualy nill as for Portugal it accounds for 10% of the population (according to european standards) and in brazil makes about 30%. For DVD market one then has to consider 9 out of 10 million Portuguese custumers +131 out of 188 million brazillians. It totals 140 million potential buyers without considering a few more from the poorer contries, VS 98 million German speakers. thats 43% greater. :) Unfortunatly there seems to be a BIAS torwards Latin american and african countries on the part of the entertainment industry (specialy the one made in Europe) and the translations are donne considering the overall importance of portugals weight in europe demographicaly speaking. .
