Knock-Knock Posted November 23, 2017 Posted November 23, 2017 I currently have 2x8Gb Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 1600 in dual channel, and wondering if adding 2x4Gb of the exact same brand and model, that I have laying around, is a good thing? I know their timings are slightly different. My board is dual channel, and I run them (and ran the old 2x4) in XMP-1600. Im too lazy to just try, cause my huge Noctua cooler is covering the DIMM's, so I have to remove it, to try it. And if unstable/slow, well then I have to remove it again . - Jack of many DCS modules, master of none. - Personal wishlist: F-15A, F-4S Phantom II, JAS 39A Gripen, SAAB 35 Draken, F-104 Starfighter, Panavia Tornado IDS. | Windows 11 | i5-12400 | 64Gb DDR4 | RTX 3080 | 2x M.2 | 27" 1440p | Rift CV1 | Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS | MFG Crosswind pedals |
mvsgas Posted November 23, 2017 Posted November 23, 2017 I'm not expert but you will probably not get any performance improvement. You might actually get the opposite result. To whom it may concern, I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that. Thank you for you patience. Many people don't want the truth, they want constant reassurance that whatever misconception/fallacies they believe in are true..
Knock-Knock Posted November 23, 2017 Author Posted November 23, 2017 Yea thats my fear too. Im not looking for more fps or anything like that (certainly dont want to loose any either) - limited what more memory would do I guess, I just want more memory for DCS really. Increase my overhead, cause this game is one very ram hungry piece of software :) And Im not gonna run out and buy memory atm, cause man they have gotten expensive. Almost twice the price of when I bought those 2x8 modules. - Jack of many DCS modules, master of none. - Personal wishlist: F-15A, F-4S Phantom II, JAS 39A Gripen, SAAB 35 Draken, F-104 Starfighter, Panavia Tornado IDS. | Windows 11 | i5-12400 | 64Gb DDR4 | RTX 3080 | 2x M.2 | 27" 1440p | Rift CV1 | Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS | MFG Crosswind pedals |
mvsgas Posted November 23, 2017 Posted November 23, 2017 Have you check how much RAM DCS uses in your system? How much vram you got on your video card? That might be a more significant update, but video cards are also overprice due to the whole mining thing. It is a drop in a ocean compared to gamers that are out there. A1 A2 B1 B2 The A1 and A2 needs to be same, can fail even if buying same but different week when manufactured. But you can put different ones to B and A slots in pairs, but your memory will be slowed down to the slowest pair. So one can go and buy a 2x8GB and 2x4GB to make it work. i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.

Demon_ Posted November 23, 2017 Posted November 23, 2017 (edited) They should need the same voltage. Look for the voltage of the RAM. The quantity of RAM has nothing to do with the performance. RAM with different frequency and timing can work together. Your bios will choose the frequency/timing of the slower pair of RAM. Even with the same brand, frequency, timing, sub-timing, the same chip and voltage, they is always a small possibility that they won't work together. It should work though as long as the motherboard manufacturer's page says both types of ram are compatible., but there is no warranty. The only way to know is to try them. I talk about the compatibility of different pair of RAM, not between two different stick of RAM used as a pair. Wait for the boxing days or black Friday. DCS need 16GB of RAM to work properly. Demon_ Posted November 23, 2017 Posted November 23, 2017 (edited) Those are dual channel, then one stick in each channel to work as a pair. Edited November 23, 2017 by Demon_ Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
