I'm playing with a Vive and although I can get a smooth 45 FPS + in free flight and ground attack, I'm desperately trying to reduce stuttering in close air combat situations. (Sometimes as low as 15 - 20 FPS)

I'm looking to upgrade my CPU from an aging AMD FX 4300 to something like a Core i5-7600X,

AMD Ryzen 5 1500X or similar.

I'm using a Nvidia 1070 PNY graphics card and about to install a SSD, so I'm sure my CPU is the weakest component now.

I'll also need a new motherboard and RAM, so the upgrade will cost £300 +. Any feedback on quality/ smoothness of game play with similar CPU spec before I invest would be much appreciated.

Thanks

I had Ryzen 1600x and was not happy with VR performance, switched to Intel i5-8600k, overclocked it to 5GHz and now it is a lot better. My recommendation: Avoid Ryzen or older Intel Generations and get an Coffee Lake CPU!

The 8600K is a nice chip but my recent costings with a midrange z370 board and 16Gb DDR4 ram is £680 ATM. The i3 https://www.scan.co.uk/products/intel-core-i3-8350k-s-1151-coffee-lake-quad-core-4-thread-40ghz-8mb-cache-1150mhz-gpu-91w-cpu-box will be a more affordable route paired with the less expensive set of boards which should be available Q1 18 and 8Gb RAM till budget permits

Ryzen is excellent for VR, just not in DCS sadly. If looking exclusively at DCS, you're best bet might be an i5-7600k or 7700k, depending on your budget. the new 8600k and 8700k demolish them in performance (as does Ryzen outside of DCS) and so retailers are trying to dump their stock for whatever they can get for them.

Thanks so much guys for your feedback..

I figured I need single core performance for DCS (and most other flight sims by the look of things), which is what I'm mostly interested in, so despite the mutli-core claims and price of the Ryzen chips Intel does look like the best way to go.

The i3 8350k seems up there at a good price and spec, (Currently £164 and around 90% better single core performance than my current CPU) i5 7600k appears about the same spec, but for some reason £40 dearer.

Socket 1151 motherboard is on its way, but not sure now between the i3 and i5

If funds allow the 8600K will be more future proofed and it has 6 physical cores so your PC will be faster and more productive with apps that scale with multicore and multitasking in general :)

Its my chip of choice for my new Christmas rig

The release statement had vulkan api listed so im sure it'll scale well. I just upgraded to the 8700k and have yet to test it with 2.0. I'm going to upgrade to the 1080ti for my rift. where as 1.5 is about single core performance 2.5 will be better served with multicore chips, if you do a search you'll find more than adequate performance with either.
