1Wolf Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 I'm looking to build a new machine for DCS as my current machine is going on 6 years old at this point (Though I did upgrade it to a GTX 1080TI a few months ago). I play DCS with VR (Oculus Rift) exclusively, so like many, I'm struggling to get all the performance I can to get the best VR frame rates and visuals that I can. I'd like to get some opinions as to what, if any, performance improvements I might expect when moving from my current machine to my planned build. The opinions of those who use VR and might have been on a machine with stats similar to mine, and who have built a new machine or upgraded to a build similar to what I'm planning would be especially helpful. My CURRENT machine is: Intel i7 3770K @ 4.5 Ghz 32 Gigs Memory EVGA GTX 1080 TI SC2 512 GB Crucial SSD The machine I'm looking to build is: Intel i7 8700K @ 5.1 or 5.2 Ghz 64 Gigs Memory EVGA GTX 1080 TI FTW3 Hybrid Samsung 960 Pro M.2 NVME 1TB My CURRENT machine, running in VR with the Oculus Rift in DCS 1.5 (I haven't played around with DCS 2.x much), usually gets around 45 FPS in the air on average. On the ground taxiing around, it could drop to the 20's or 30's. In the air if there is a lot of activity on the ground...like doing CAS missions in the A-10C in the middle of a big battle...it could drop to the teens. At that point, for that kind of mission, I usually need to drop my detail settings a bit. The detail settings I usually use are: PD of 1.8 Textures, Terrain Textures, Vis range, Heat Blur set to high Civ Traffic, Water, Shadows set to Low Depth of Field, Lens effects Off Terrain Object Shadows Off HDR On MSAA 4x Anisotropic Filtering 8x Middle-to-Low Clutter/Grass and Trees settings As mentioned above, my current machine is getting a bit old and I'm wondering if the CPU is holding back the GPU power and I'm just trying to determine whether I'm going to see decent increases building the new machine, or whether they are likely to be very modest. Also, as an FYI, I'm aware of the whole intel thing going on (at least, what is known and been discussed on the internet so far). I'm holding off on building anything until there are more benchmarks, more info, etc. I'm not going to get all bent out of shape and change my plans until more of this plays out. Thanks for the help and opinions :)
BitMaster Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 DONT BUY NOW ! read the news, u may wanna consider an AMD after reading the news. I sell u my 8700k, tuned n polished.... and 64gb in a z370...good luck !!!! they are not too ram friendly atm, better go for a more conservative ram setup Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
lemoen Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 I agree. Your current machine is plenty. Try 2.2 if you're not sure but I'm guessing it'll run a lot better than 1.5.8. 1.5.x runs horribly, esp if the mission has a bunch of AI.
dburne Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 If I were upgrading now ( my rig is 4 yrs old), what you are looking at is likely what I would be shooting for. ( sorry I just am not that concerned on the Intel thing). I would say you certainly would see some gains, especially with that higher PD setting you are using along with MSAA x4. Just be aware no machine currently will give you a constant 90 fps in DCS. Buckeye Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 64GB of RAM is excessive, even your current 32 GB of RAM is mostly excessive for DCS usage....unless you plan on 5+ hour sessions and springing memory leaks. mr_mojo97 Posted January 5, 2018 Posted January 5, 2018 And wait till 2.5 comes out at the end of the month. It should be more optimised than it is at the mo and should have some more fps (I hope). And you could put your IP down to 1.5 - I can’t really see that much difference between 1.5 and 2 anyways and you do get more frames in there MSI M5 z270 | Intel i5 7600k (OC) 4.8GHz | MSI GTX1080ti Gaming X 11Gb | 500gb Samsung 970 Evo NVME M.2 (DCS World) | 500gb Samsung 850 Evo SSD (OS and Apps) | 32Gb 2400MHz DDR4 - Crucial Ballistix | Be Quiet Silent Loop 240mm | NZXT H440 case | Thrustmaster Warthog - 47608 with Virpil Mongoose joystick base | MFG Crosswinds - 1241 | Westland Lynx collective with Bodnar X board | Pilot's seat from ZH832 Merlin | JetSeat | Oculus Rift S | Windows 10 | VA |
