Hi All,

I just purchased the early release of the Harrier. I have one major problem though. No matter how closely I follow the start up procedure via the manual as well as half a dozen YouTube videos, I can not get the engine to spin up.

The number in the top right of the centre up panel, just remain on '00000'. I hear what sounds like the engine start to spin up, take it out of Throttle Idle etc.

Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

Thank you

Almost all Harrier failed starts come down to the throttle. Do not touch the throttle under any circumstances until you are ready to take it out of idle. Do not move it to sync it, or anything else.

To test if this is the problem, you can flip the fuel shutoff valve (black, on top of throttle), if the throttle moves back at all, it means you touched it. Flip the valve again and try another engine start. It should spool up now.

Again, if you look through this forum, you'll find the same issue repeatedly coming up, and in every case thus far, it is because they're touching the throttle before they should. It MUST be fully back.

I’m guessing you just started the APU? (I hear what sounds like the engine start to spin) After APU is started right click the engine start switch to get the RPM to increase.

Uh that's wrong.

At first you do not need the apu at all, second is that you do not increase engine RPM via the start switch, you only hear the starting cycle. To increase RPM move your throttle after the engine start switch is flipped and the engine sound stabilizes.

Uh, no that's not wrong.

You can start the APU manually, if you wish, though you don't have to.

When you flick the engine start switch, the RPMs come up to 92.

After THAT you move the throttle out of idle and it comes up to speed.

The best way for us to see what's wrong with your sequence is that you provide a short track.

So, we can see the problem.

have you taken the parking break off?

Releasing the parking break releases the throttle above idle.

Might not be your issue, but also might contribute.

Startup sequence:

Turn on battery, gen and apu

Turn on fuel pumps, decs and fuel lever,

Engine startup, once engine RPM move throttle fwd to detent, engine spools up.

Release parking break, allowing throttle full movement.

There are other steps to become functional, but that should get the engines going.

That’s funny, because that works for me.

@Lunatic, he's talking about a failed engine start. The parking break won't keep you from starting the engine, it'll just keep you from going anywhere once it's on :P

Hi All,

Thank you all for your comments. Stupidly, it was the APU I had forgotten. It does not show it in any of the videos, but as soon as I do that, the counter goes up to 00092

Thanks again all

Since there is no track and no video, I can only assume you where not giving the Ground Turbine Starter (GTS) enough time. Once you select engine start, the GTS need to spool up first, this is modeled. If the APU is running first, there should be a 10 second delay but it is not modeled as of versions 1.5.8.12823.414/2.2.0.12843.297

From the A1-AV8BB-NFM-000, page 7-15

On a direct engine start, the GTS normally lights off in about 5 seconds, after which the engine begins to rotate.

On a translation start (APU started first), there is a 10 second deceleration of the APU before the GTS engages to

start the engine.

To whom it may concern,

I am an idiot, unfortunately for the world, I have a internet connection and a fondness for beer....apologies for that.

Thank you for you patience.
