tmdgm Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 I think I'm getting better at avoiding missiles. But when do you use ECM? Turn it on right away and leave it on? Or wait till they launch and then turn it on?
ФрогФут Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 But when do you use ECM? Never.:))) Turn it on right away and leave it on? As you wish, BUT NOT THIS WAY. Turn it for few seconds after you're locked, then off. That will make the enemy to loose the lock. Program2 Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 ECM usage is very sensitive these days :). Make sure you don't hurt anyone's feelings.
Cosmonaut Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Well if I'm carrying ECM pods then I'll turn them on, when engaging an enemy, until I burn through and then I'll fire and immediately stop jamming. Your ECM can work against you if you just leave them on as part of your start up procedure :smilewink: so just remeber how sneaky an HOJ shot against you can be. Cozmo. Or wait till they launch and then turn it on? A) If you have a flashing RWR (missile was launched at you) or if after “burn-through” means if you can lock-on the bandit (strobe is gone and probably the bandit lost his strobe on you) then it is about time that you put yours off too (except when you have that special blinking-ECM-macro on) B) ECM is basically useful to hide your range/altitude only outside burn-through range (see A) You are vulnerable for HOJ shots but only if you are flying in a straight line into the missiles direction! Some servers don’t permit you to toggle the ECM on and off even by hand. What is next? Pilotasso Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 I use ECM when I want to conceal my actions. Sometimes the enemy locks me up, I swich radar off and ECM on and start flying in circles. This will propmt him into HOJ that cannot possibly hit you. Sometimes they give up going for another team mate, then I swich radar on, and ECM off and start shooting. .
Aeroscout Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 well, the 'forcing him to go after another team mate" is kinda mean, bu then, you do get the clean shot, so all's well. Pilotasso Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 LOL, well thats what wingmen are for, besides if he gets into trouble hell have cover nearby. .
Kula66 Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 After a SAM launch ... Turn it on, turn 45degs away from SAM, wait 15secs and turn it off ... repeat as necessary!
Guest IguanaKing Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 Against SAMs, I only use it if it will allow me to get far enough into its radar coverage to eliminate my primary target. If I can't do that, I go to plan B...draw his fire so that all of his launchers are exhausted, then I go in and smack the radar before he can reload. No ECM or other countermeasures needed. I just look for the flash as he launches, and turn 180 degrees from that reference.
JaBoG32_Prinzartus Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 I personally use it when my RWR detectsa missile launch. I have a cahff macro, that chaffs, turns ecm on and off, then chaffs again. I never used a "ECM strobe macro" so far. Seems like an exploit to me. But I dont flame people who do, but I dont like it either. MBot Posted February 25, 2007 Posted February 25, 2007 As ground pounder I see little use for ECM at the moment, I almost never load the SPS-141. ECM will decrease lock-on range of SAM sites, but most often the kinematic range of the missiles itselfe is the limiting factor. Take the Hawk SAM for example, the weapon the SPS-141 was designed to counter. If you stay below 2000m, the engagement range of the Hawk is down to something about 30km ( denser air down low -> missile with less range ). This is well inside the burn through range of the Hawk radar against the SPS-141 ECM. Therefore it makes absolute no difference if you have the jammer running or not. I guess against SAM's the jammer is only of use when you operate at high alt, where the burn through range is the decisive factor and not missile range.
Poopskadoop Posted February 26, 2007 Posted February 26, 2007 I use it primarily against long range SAMs. I usually let them lock me, fire their missile, and then I turn ECM on; he loses the lock, and the missile explodes. This works only when you are flying on the edges of the SAM's engagement zone. Get too close and ECM won't help you. You can easily make them run out of munitions this way. Of course, it's sort of exploiting the AI because they never seem to realize that firing from that distance is useless.
