what are you talking about "********"?

First, that is NOT an official picture of an A-10C....mostly because if it was it would be on a website of .mil (obviously its on a .com) so that is a personal taken picture. If it was an official picture, it would have a "complete intrument panel".

Second, if you honestly think that the whole panel is gone and going to remain like that, you couldnt be any more wrong. There have been rumors and things saying their thinking about making the weapon systems electronic, aka. (digital). As you can see, it is the size of a small LCD.

Third, I really cant wait till I see that aircraft put into its paces in combat :D

IT was an upgrade photo; I think most people here know that the PACS was replaced by a nice MFD ... what are -you- on about?

Anyway, I just think the A-10C is some awesome beast! I would call it "right-tech" rather than "low-tech" or "high-tech".

Some Pentagon high-brass have phantasies about the fancy F-35 playstation plane to replace THIS genuine, battle-hardened warrior? Dream on, guys!

ya, not goint to happen. the A-10 will be the best for some time. (what with upgrades and what not.)

DCS Wishlist: 1) FIX THE DAMN RIVERS!!! 2) Spherical or cylindrical panorama view projection. 3) Enhanced input options (action upon button release, etc). 4) Aircraft flight parameter dump upon exit (stick posn, attitude, rates, accel, control volume, control-surface positions, SAS bias, etc). 5) ADS-33 maneuver courses as static objects. 6) Exposed API or exports of trim position and stick force for custom controllers. 7) Select auto multiple audio devices

yes, we should have stuck with the F-14, but hey, nothing we can do now.

You know- he's right. Obviously they should have stuck with the F14 as their primary multi-service CAS platform. Oh....they will regret this day!!!!!!!!

F14??? F-4 Phantom you must mean ;)

Just kidding of course, F-35 will be fine, but in the mean time lets hope ED does something more with A-10!

The F-35 is not a replacement for the A-10.

The A-10 can handle being shot at.

You don't want the F-35's precious paint getting scuffed on the other hand ;)

This again is more proof that the Fast Movers are taking a back seat in combat and slower aircraft as well as choppers are now the choice for troop support...

Duuh, the dudes they fight are rich, but rich in the sense of being able to buy 1 or 2 aging MANPADS, not like buying an airfroce for themselves. In any case the battlefield will become more unfair with all the UCAVs and standoff smart weapons.

Being slow is not that bad, gives the pilot more time, and less stress, that may be the difference between being shot at or getting the bad guy on the first pass. The modern militaries should not get too dependant on data links, but maybe that's conservative thinking and maybe a slight hint of the Terminator.

Yes its very clear that combat is heading into that direction....

A good example of the economic ease that combat choppers can be handled is the classic movie Black Hawk Down...

the F-35 is believed to replace the F-16, F-15, A-10, F-117, and every F/A-18A-C.

Personally I think the government is just screwed up and is wasting billions of tax payers dollars on a new jet when the RAPTOR hasnt even been in service for a few years. The F-22 and F-35 are the same exact thing just about in ability and as the 22 costs like 70-80 mil a unit and the 35 like 100-150 mil a unit? COME ON!!!

Posted

It isn't 'the government'. The AF, IIRC, never really -wanted- the A-10, as far as that goes.

As for the F-22 and F-35 being the same thing - nahuh.

The F-22 is the pilot. The F-35 you can expect to be incrementally more advanced and cheaper.

They are definitely -not- 'about the same' in ability. Nowhere -near- that.

In addition, I've stopped looking at budget figures since they just don't tell you WTF it is they're really reporting ...

In the place of the hole, there should be just digital clock and AoA meter. Nothing special. ;)

The Litening pod combined with Rover must be the single most useful development of the latest years. Targeting pods are bringing a new lease of life to a lot of older airframes: Harrier, Tornado, and last I read that S-3 vikings are taking over the Tomcat Lantirn pods.

The S-3 Viking? Why?

How much maneuverability do you need to deliver a 2000lbs bomb from 15000' against a non-moving target? :)

The S-3 Vikings are flying in the NTISR role (Non-Traditional Intelligence,Surveillance and Recconaissance).

They keep an eye from the sky to protect troops on the ground, e.g. warning for a suspect vehicle ahead of a column etc.

With Rover, the troops can see the video-feed of the Lantirn pod directly on their own PC.

The Vikings also can target laser maverick AGM-65E with the lantirn pod, or buddy lase with it for other air assets.

It must be said that while the raptors are looking for possible alien invaders at 50000ft, some more mundaine work is still happening in the lower airspaces of this world.

Ok, good point. Has this ever been attempted/acomplished IRL?

My source about the Viking this time is Combat Aircraft, European Edition, Volume 8 nr. 2 May 2007 (hey, we are still in April!)
