My bro finally got FC. we got it installed(after giving the computer the "allow command like 10 times) and after that, it installed like a dream. however, when we go to play it, it star force says: "Error: you need administrative privileges"

How do we bypass this. My bro has a decent laptop, 1.8GHz dual core AMD 2Gb DDR2 RAM NVidia 7600 Go and is running Vista home premium.

any advice would be great. as of right now, we are going to try th 1.12a patch and see if that helps. otherwise, we need help.

Thanks

I think you'll need to logg in as administrator (Windows Vista sucks and blows)

You have to RUN it as administrator. Right click on the icon and go to properties, select the compatibilities tab, select run in Windows Xp SP2 and also select (at the bottom of the page) run this program as administrator. Thatll divvy you up.

Yeah I found out about that when I was installing Americas Army. Read the troubleshooting forums there before I even installed it (because 2.8.0 was 2.5 gbs large and I was looking for something smaller) and stumbled across that info. Thank god for Americas #1 Mind Numbing Freeware for PC.

I better be gettin' repped for the last post, lol...10 more points to go before I get my 3rd box.

Never mind, i found out you need to get new starforce drivers... i'll try that and post again if (and when :D ) I encounter a 3rd problem.

Thanks for you help!

Perhaps you need to read up on Windows Vista. ;)

In Windows Vista, you are never running as an administrator by default. That is to say, even if you are a member of the (default) "administrators" (security) group, you do not have administrator priviliges. This was done to mitigate security issues. After all, administrative priviliges have a lot of power ;) In windows vista, to elevate priviliges (when this is required, e.g. when changing a system setting or installing software) you need to give your consent (click "Allow"). These dialog windows are created by UAC (User Account Control).

You may wonder then, if even an administrator account isn't running with administrative priviliges (by default), what is the difference with a normal user account? The difference is that when you need to elevate your priviliges to administrator level, you only have to click on "Allow" (this is called the "consent UI"), whereas a normal user has to enter a user name and password of an administrator account (the "credential UI"). Depending on the situation, the end-user may not know the password and needs to ask someone who does (corporate scenario, or home scenario when you have kids ;) )

Older software installation programs obviously weren't created with this new system in mind and thus can give some problems. UAC tries to automatically detect application such as installers and throws up a consent dialog ("Allow"/"Deny") when you run them. Obviously, this is only a best effort and with certain applications you will need to explicitely "Run as an administrator".

One reason why you may get a lot of UAC prompts with older software is because it is often doing things which require administrative priviliges, even though it shouldn't. For example, opening a system file with read-write mode, eventhough the application will only read the file. Hopefully, developers will change their habits when developing applications for Windows Vista so they only use the priviliges that are required, thus allowing a normal user to use the application without having to elevate.

UAC acts as a gatekeeper system. If you give an application permission to run with elevated priviliges, you are responsible for the consequences ;)

Provide a link for you?

No, i got it. thanks for your help. (starforce and vista suck!)

I also got him hyperlobby, needless to say, it has it's difficulties as well. but everything's fine now.

Thanks

... or home scenario when you have kids ;) ...

kinda funny you say this. I'm a kid, yet know more about computers than either of my parents. thus, i'm the administrator of my own computer. (and do not abuse it.)

But your right, and that was a good overview and I understand it now. thanks.

I think Vista is a very good operating system this early on. I have never had any system problems with it yet.

Vista is not perfect, but better than XP if you ask me.
