Should i buy a 8800 GTX ?

Recommended Posts

Im opting for components for my new rig. I own an ATI right now but the new one is going to be an 8800GTS 640MB. I dont think it will lack power any time soon for my games. I wasnt going to wayt for the 2900's but now that they arrived I think I was right in not puting my build on hold because of it, IMHO it draws too much power and noise for the kind of perfomance it delivers. While its a good performer it just demands too much from my PSU and cooling system. Its technicaly more risky to assemble it yourself.

I can play decently on this rig, but thats just that "decently" I cant crank up the graphics and some online missions get realy chopy after the first sortie.

Sure hope so to get at least 10X the computing power on my new rig...Im zeroing on its final specs... Asus Commando...quad core Q6600@3 GHZ FSB 1333Mhz and a 8800 GTS 640...it better deliver :D

I think the question is: what are the other specifications of your PC. It's not good getting a 8800GTX while still running an AMD 64 3500 :)

The other point is, I'm not really sure you're going to notice a huge performance difference between the R600s and the 8800s. It might really come down to the cost factor.

I think while shopping for any component, the best thing to do is do your research, make your choice, and don't worry too much about not getting the best component out there. It's too stressful doing that!

Okay fellas, i need your opinion, especially by 8800 GTX users.

Are you satisfied with this VideoCard ?

PS: I won`t buy a 8800 GTS or the 2900XT, if the 8800 GTX isnt top in your opinions i will wait for the 2900 XTX.

But don't buy if if you only play Lock On!

You just do not need this graphic power for this game!

If you want to play something like Crysis, then the 8800gtx might be good for you (but you will need a very strong cpu to use all its power)

think well about it. If you own a powerful processor -64 X2 or Core 2Duo- and besides your updating from a mid-range graphics card the 8800 will suit you well. It's well known that games nowadays are intensively GPU demanding so an 8800 is the way I suggest you to go.

Only if you're still running a mid-range rig and you're not interested in upgrading the whole platform soon you may want to grab the ATI 2900 since the CPU will surely bottleneck any other more powerful GPU you put and you'll be saving around 100 bucks.

It's up to you. I suggest you to go through every single benchmark where these two beasts meet and check the the testing rig that was used.

My rig specs:

Intel Core i7 4770 @3.4Ghz // Corsair 16GB DDR3 // MoBo Asus Z87K // HDD 1TB 7200RPM // eVGA Nvidia GTX 760GT 2GB DDR5 // LG 3D 47" 1920x1080 // Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS // Saitek Combat Pro Pedals // Thrustmaster MFD Cougar pack // PS3 Eye + FTNOIR

As I said, its going to be replaced by a P35 chipset MOBO if I can find one. Thx anyway, besides I want to be able to RMA it if it comes to that, take no ofense but if yours get screwed I also get stuck with no warranty and be forced to buy a new one anyway.

THX again. :)

I would replace the Q6600/2.40GHz with

Intel Core 2 Duo E6700/2.67GHz FSB1066 4MB (BX80557E6700)

And replace the 8800GTS

with the8800GTX ;)

gah! Im not rich like you! :D The GTS is just fine and much much cheaper than the GTX. Just been informed that there will be P5K Deluxe in stock tuesday next week, so that is practicaly settled. The CPU is not 100% decided yet but the Quad is favoured, I already droped from the initial intention to get the QX9700 after numerous advices for that efect in here and on reviews. :)

I can Overclock the Q6600 but I cant Over-Core the E6600 :D

Anyway “My stuff is 4 years old” and I don’t change before 1 core out of quad doubles my single core CPU score.

Out of interest: Why do you need quad over dual core?

Unless you are going to play with “Rybka_v2_3_1_mp_x64” Chess Engine (multiple processor /64 bit support) or render movies all day long:D .

Well... I think he's looking forward to the upcoming gaming level. If I had the money I'd buy the quad core processor too. It is said -and already seen- that games will take advantage of multi core processors.

They will, furthermore there will be more and more quad cores coming the next few months. Duals will look like celerons by comparison. :)
