oldpop Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Are the missiles the same (AIM 120 and AIM9) modeled the same if used on the F15 and F18? Performance seem different!
schurem Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Launch speed, altitude and attitude matter a LOT. The same missile launched at 350kts at sea level is almost not BVR at all while it can blast a non-maneouvering supersonic target from across the solar system if launched at angels 40 and mach 2. Baco Posted September 5, 2018 Posted September 5, 2018 Well and I asuem the 350kts is teh Hornte and the space ship is the Eagle? well with 40.000 feet and mach 2, you are giving th emissile a LOT of kinetic energy as while firing from low and slow you deprive of such energy to the misle... Try the opposite, and have an eagle donw and slow vs a hornet high and fats.. and chek it out. albeit the Bug cant reach mach 2....
oldpop Posted September 6, 2018 Author Posted September 6, 2018 AIM 120 performance RW stats: Wingspan 20.7 in (530 mm) AIM-120A/B Operational range • AIM-120A/B: 55–75 km (30–40 nmi)[3][4] • AIM-120C-5: >105 km (>57 nmi)[5] • AIM-120D (C-8): >180 km (>97 nmi)[6][full citation needed] Speed Mach 4 (4,900 km/h; 3,045 mph) If I got 15nm it is a LOng shot:smilewink:
MurderOne Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 At 25,xxx altitude, Mach 0.89, locked MiG-29 closing, I get an initial SHOOT at 38 miles, and RNE at 36. This was with an AIM-120C, though it did seem to lose a bunch of go well before it got close, and never did hit the MiG. Sorry, no cool signature here.
S Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 (edited) Do you fire your AIM-120s in LOFT mode? I *think* the F-15 may automatically switch between the 'normal' and LOFT firing solutions. The F/A-18 definitely does not. Cheers! Edited September 6, 2018 by S Added more information
Majinbot Posted September 6, 2018 Posted September 6, 2018 The real performance of a modern missile is known only by those who work in the sector, but here everyone want to have a missile that reach 100 nm against an enemy plane that performs defensive maneuvers and pretend to hit the target 100% of the time. Instead the percentage is less than 50% (confirmed by a real pilot). Banzaiib Posted September 7, 2018 Posted September 7, 2018 (edited) I've had a couple multiplayer kills just beyond 25 miles with the AIM-7. They were perfect conditions against a mirage not paying attention with 1200kts close speed at 25k ft altitude. I'd say that's a HUGE improvement over the previous drag modeling we've all had to endure for years. I hope they do the same for all of the r-27's. Edited September 7, 2018 by Banzaiib
