Frostie Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 I know this is wip but currently iff consists of square for friendly, diamond for no return. This can add an unneccesary element of confusion when banked. Surely it would have made more sense to go with a circle for friend. "[51☭] FROSTIE" #55 'Red 5'. backspace340 Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 It's a simulation of the real F/A-18C Hornet, they aren't going to make changes that aren't realistic and it's realistic that hostiles are shown with diamonds and unknowns with boxes. I don't believe we actually have the HUD symbology for 'friendly' enabled yet - as far as I can tell that should be represented by a box with the word 'FRIEND' on top. We just have hostile and unknown implemented right now.
Frostie Posted September 12, 2018 Author Posted September 12, 2018 You'd probably have to take it up with Boeing not ED. Diamond means hostile not unknown though. I don't think it is possible to interrogate for hostile. Probably box is initial lock (unknown), diamond is no iff return. Raz_Specter Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 i agree, although i think we need to stick with realism :) - I am sure the real hornet makes its mind up pretty fast, so maybe ED need to work on that to get it working properly Custom built W10 Pro 64Bit, Intel Core i9 9900k, Asus ROG Maximus Code XI Z390, 64GB DDR4 3200 RGB, Samsung 1TB NVme M.2 Drive, Gigabyte AORUS 2080TI, 40" Iiyama Display. backspace340 Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 I don't think it is possible to interrogate for hostile. Probably box is initial lock (unknown), diamond is no iff return. It is possible for something to be designated hostile (albeit not by the IFF which is just friendly/not friendly) - we'll be able to do it ourselves eventually (you can manually change the IFF designation of a trackfile) and the AWACs/Carrier can also do it for you and send it to you over Link-16. It's a bit of a bodge-job for the Hornet right now so it's not clear exactly what they're trying to model though it's clear it's not modelled accurately from an IFF perspective (but the symbology is correct). Given the EW page can tell you that one Hornet is friendly and the other is enemy (which is something that should only be possible with Link-16 as far as I know), they're obviously taking shortcuts. I imagine they've just taken the simple approach that if the game says something is enemy, then it shows as hostile - there is no IFF to return negative as such.
Doum76 Posted September 12, 2018 Posted September 12, 2018 (edited) Circle? in other words at first sight you'd get confused as per, are you locked on target, which is circle, or it'S an unlock friendly which is circle also? And what about a locked friend by mistake on boresight, a circle, inside a circle, inside a circle.... that's pretty much a bunch of circles if real Hornets would be as this.. StandingCow Posted September 13, 2018 Posted September 13, 2018 I suspect that IFF isn't reliable enough in even real life to be the end all be all (ED has even marked this as the request wouldn't be accurate). What would really help is a declare function with AWACS. 5900X - 32 GB 3600 RAM - 1080TI My Twitch Channel ~Moo

What would really help is a declare function with AWACS. It wasn't a request so I don't understand why it has been moved to wishlist. I was questioning the logic. As it happens the iff is incomplete, as we knew (which incidently is inaccurate) there is currently no friendly indication but there will be a clear distinction for friendly in future updates.
