I have a few for those that are fimiliar with real protocol.

First, is it procedure to actually drop your payload before landing? In game it's much easier to land it winchester. Or do you keep what you have unless its an emergency? I've heard that your supposed to, but wasn't sure.

Second, when is the proper time to use the IR jamming system? As your entering target area and/or when your being engaged? I've been turning it on as part of the start up procedure, and was curious when to actually engage this.

Thanks for any info fellas. :)

hmm I doubt it. But I also don't think that the planes leave with the types of payloads you can put on in LOMAC anyway. I'm thinking that they leave with a specific mission in mind, a payload designed to accomplish it. When the mission is over- they are RTB with a relatively light load. I don't know what actual protocol is regarding the IR jammers- But I turn mine on as I approach the engagement area. I can't imagine you'd want to unneccessarily wear down a 500kw disco ball any longer than what is needed.

Might not be completely relevant to the question, but makes for good reading - an excerpt from the Journal of a Navy WW2 Hellcat Pilot:

"...Original policy had been for returning flights to jettison, into the sea, any unexpended ordnance. After deciding this was a great waste of ammunition, rockets, and bombs, we were directed to land aboard with all unused ordnance...."

This is dangerously misleading with respect to RL procedures. RL if you expect to bring heavy weapons back to a carrier such that they will cause you to exceed your min landing weight you dump'em, you don't land with'em.

When landing a land-based aircraft, your minimum landing weight is much greater, so you can bring things back if you so wish, so long as you aren't overloaded.

Similarily, while it isn't applicable in LOMAC, the IR jammer should not be operated near your own airfield, and certainly not on the ground for safety and/or maintenance reasons. Other than that remember it has a warm-up time, so make sure you've turned it on a few minutes before you enter the combat area.

When the mission is over-
and what if you abort? ;)

anyway, when it comes to reducing weight, fuel comes first, i'd think..

Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

Forgive me if I'm wrong: I thought I'd seen that there is no warm-up time modelled within the game?

IIRC your not supposed to land with unused ordnance period, with the exception of malfunctions to the ejection racks. The reason behind this is "what if" they release all of the sudden upon arrival?

I did ask on the forums when I was making up my "Up-to-speeed Guide for the Su-25T" and Ironhand responded. They knew about the warm-up period but said that they modelled it as instant-on.
