Phil73805 Posted November 15, 2018 Posted November 15, 2018 Well, the title says it all (which won't stop me from saying more). I am considering the upgrade. Why not the 1080TI? Because that would involve upgrading the power supply as well which is a step too far for me. My PC has a 500W power supply and I'm told that it could run the 1070TI with some margin. The real question is, is the performance increase worth the expense? Or should I bite the bullet, upgrade the power supply and then go for 1080TI? I use TrackIR5, not VR and I use one monitor for the sim (24") in 1920x1080 resolution, so the 1080TI might be overkill. (I also run a second monitor) I'd be grateful for your opinions. BuzzU Posted November 15, 2018 Posted November 15, 2018 Looking at your system, and the monitor/trackir you use. You should be getting good performance. Buzz
Svsmokey Posted November 15, 2018 Posted November 15, 2018 (edited) All I can say is if you are considering getting a 1080ti , you should do so soon . Stocks are being depleted rapidly , and no new ones are being made . And i would upgrade the power supply in either event . Btu/watt goes up as the power supply nears it's upper limit , shortening its life . As to performance/expense , it depends on your upgrade path . Considering VR ? 1080ti the better choice . 4k ? The same . Exporting MFD's ? The 1070ti will run 1440p as well as 1080p very well , and will provide headroom for increased AA . Biggus Posted November 15, 2018 Posted November 15, 2018 I agree with BuzzU. Your system should be performing reasonably well. Is your i5-8600k only running at 3.6ghz? If yes, that's where I'd be starting. I have a 7600k at just over 5ghz with a five year old AIO cooler. It's paired to half your RAM and a 1070Ti with an ultrawide 1440p monitor and it is pretty good. If I were you, I would consider a 1070Ti only if I was not prepared at all to change my power supply and I wasn't patient enough to wait and see what the 2060 is going to be like.
Phil73805 Posted November 15, 2018 Author Posted November 15, 2018 In truth I am getting good performance but I was looking to see if a simple upgrade would give it just that bit extra. Based on your perspectives it would seem that even the 1070TI would require a power unit upgrade which is a bit much for a tweak. I thought I might try and increase the longevity of my system with a straight GPU swap but I think I will run it as is for now and work on getting my setup ready for some rudder pedals...and then the TM Warthog :) Thank you all.
