So I have an i7 8700K, and so far I have had no luck getting a stable overclock to 5ghz. All research says this should be entirely possible but I've had no luck. Does anyone have any tips?

I'm currently running at 4.8 and can do that at 1.3v with temperatures in the 40-60 range depending on load.

Also - will it make any difference in VR going from 4.8 to 5ghz? I am complete newbie to this so I'm sort of finding my way here.

TIP: Overclock just core 1 to 5GHZ.

DCS just use core 1 for the game and core 2 for audio. :D

actually it seems that the gains from "sync all cores" are substantianl

test it and you see the results. :D

4.8 is good enough. Going to 5Ghz will give you 5% extra speed, possibly, which means it'll increase from 45 to 47 fps i.e. negligible difference.

The 8700k tends to run hot bc Intel did not solder the chip. So, if you really want to overclock it and still be in a reasonable temperature range, you need to delid. You can learn about that here:

Now, when you first see this you may feel you will ruin your processor, but it is actually very easy. And, for most people their temps drop by 15 deg C or more under load (like Prime 95).

If you don't want to delid, you will still need to learn to use your BIOS correctly, and most guys run their overclocks on adaptive voltage of about 1.35 volts for 5 GHz with no offshoot. And no, there will be very little FPS difference in going from 4.8 to 5.0 GHz with the 8700k as concerns DCS and VR. I've tested it and it averages about 2.3% better. YMMV

Mine is running at 5.0 or 5.1 (can't remember) w/ no issues. I used RocketCool (https://rockitcool.myshopify.com/) and took me no more than 45min from start to finish. Couldn't be easier to delid the 8700K. And Yes, I too saw 10-15deg drop in temperature.
