-Vindicator- Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 Hi. I’d like to land an f15 on a carrier for acrobatic purposes only. There’s a website called aerobatics online and they have maps with carriers. The Caucasus map shows temp=1 degree; QNH 760/29.92; wind at ground, 2 m/s: 60%. A carrier is travelling 24 knots with a 310 heading. A guy named Cecil with an f15 landed on a carrier. I didn’t see the landing but I saw the f15 on the carrier and read the texts of people who had just seen him land. I should have asked him more questions but one thing he said was he landed with 500 lbs of fuel. I asked him if his AOA was 23 and he said no, he would have crashed with that AOA. So my questions are these: 1. Can the unmodified DCS f15 land on a carrier? 2. If it can be done, how do you do it? (the more specific the better) I want to do it just for fun. It this has been answered before, sorry, please direct me to the thread. If I should pose these questions elsewhere, please tell me where. Thanks!
chaser Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 theres even a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ_tYNvvG8g [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Blaze1 Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 The main (left rear at least) landing gear was damaged and it looked like it was flying in slow motion, so possibly flew into a gale force headwind.
draconus Posted January 26, 2019 Posted January 26, 2019 (edited) Challenge accepted! btw: What's "60%"?F-15C carrier.trk Edited January 26, 2019 by draconus Win10 i7-10700KF 32GB RTX4070S Quest 3 T16000M VPC CDT-VMAX TFRP FC3 F-14A/B F-15E CA SC NTTR PG Syria
Knock-Knock Posted January 27, 2019 Posted January 27, 2019 theres even a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJ_tYNvvG8g That certainly isnt 2 m/s windspeed. Its more like 75 m/s. Can see his indicated airspeed is around 250 kts, while the corrected in F2 is below 100 kts. A lot of wind there. - Jack of many DCS modules, master of none. - Personal wishlist: F-15A, F-4S Phantom II, JAS 39A Gripen, SAAB 35 Draken, F-104 Starfighter, Panavia Tornado IDS. | Windows 11 | i5-12400 | 64Gb DDR4 | RTX 3080 | 2x M.2 | 27" 1440p | Rift CV1 | Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS | MFG Crosswind pedals |
Commandosolo Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 it seems to me that he is landing in a hurricane, especially at the end. he just almost hovers and then bounces on the deck. I would suspect you could land a SR-71 in that headwind.
-Vindicator- Posted January 28, 2019 Author Posted January 28, 2019 Chaser: Thanks! I've seen this video. The guy who posted it said, "I set it wind speed 50 m/s so I can fly extremely low speed so I can land it this way." But 50 m/s equals about 112 mph. As mentioned in my original post, the guy who did it online did it with wind at 2 m/s. Draconus: my bad, I meant to hit a degree symbol so it would indicate 60 degrees, not 60%. And thanks for accepting the challenge! I'm having difficulty opening your track, and I've tried copying it so I could open it in DCS. Could I please ask you to give me specific step-by-step instructions re how to open it? Thanks!!
-Vindicator- Posted January 28, 2019 Author Posted January 28, 2019 P.S.: Chaser & Draconus: Both of you have answered the two questions I originally posed, so thanks! But what I really meant to ask was (1) whether an unmodified F15 could land on a carrier in the circumstances I intended to specify in my original question (incl. wind at 2 m/s, 60 degrees) and (2) if so, how? Thanks!
draconus Posted January 28, 2019 Posted January 28, 2019 (edited) my bad, I meant to hit a degree symbol so it would indicate 60 degrees, not 60%. And thanks for accepting the challenge! I'm having difficulty opening your track, and I've tried copying it so I could open it in DCS. Could I please ask you to give me specific step-by-step instructions re how to open it? Thanks!! Save the .trk file into \saved games\dcs\tracks or wherever. In DCS open it through Replay menu, it will be there or "wherever" you have saved it. Just watch - it answers both questions: 1. Yes. 2. See for yourself. I set your parameters in the mission so you can take control anytime during playback. 2m/s equals 3.8kts so I set 4kts. Did not get what was that 60% so I set the wind direction to 140deg. It's really weak wind so direction 60 makes it a little crosswind and doesn't make it neither challenging or helping. I'll change it anyway for you next time and send you a mission file. It's not like I did it first time - it was 5th or 6th :) The margin for error is very small. Keep the challenges coming! Edit: ...maybe this crosswind adds some fun. Here you have a mission file. Put into \saved games\dcs\missions, load from Mission > My Missions menu.F-15C carrier.miz Edited January 28, 2019 by draconus Win10 i7-10700KF 32GB RTX4070S Quest 3 T16000M VPC CDT-VMAX TFRP FC3 F-14A/B F-15E CA SC NTTR PG Syria
-Vindicator- Posted January 30, 2019 Author Posted January 30, 2019 Outstanding! I'll open these files as soon as I get home. Thanks again!!
-Vindicator- Posted January 31, 2019 Author Posted January 31, 2019 Opened it just now. All I can say is, dang! You're the man!
draconus Posted February 1, 2019 Posted February 1, 2019 Last night I failed to repeat my stunt in the mission with corrected wind direction (crosswind). Seems like whole lot different deal next to impossible. Win10 i7-10700KF 32GB RTX4070S Quest 3 T16000M VPC CDT-VMAX TFRP FC3 F-14A/B F-15E CA SC NTTR PG Syria
