More specifically the price of it. £49.

They certainly know how to charge. I though £29 for a replacement facial interface plate was extortionate but £49 for a proprietary cable made in their tens of thousands.

Sorry to keep repeating it but if I do, the shock will wear off faster.

So to cut a long story short, Oculus headset has started presenting the orange light at times and refusing to fire up. Sometimes a restart will cure it, sometimes unplugging the cable and reseating it will cure it.

Then I noticed a very slight deformation in the cable about 50mm from the plug right where it comes out from behind the faceplate (2" for those still using old money in the US). When squeezing and manipulating this deformation, I notice the white LED lit and the headset fired up when covering the sensor.

No idea how the cable got damaged as it comes from overhead via a retractable dog lead and mast setup, so it is never in contact with any solid surface and the lead mounting point is a long way from the damage. It started last week, so it is either a recent thing, or developed over a long period of time and has now degraded sufficiently to cause malfunctions.

These things never improve with age so I ordered another.... £49 cough. :noexpression:

Yeah I have a spare new cable myself here in my desk drawer for just such a reason.

Don't want any down time if mine goes.

Sent my headset back for rma replacement a year ago, infamous speaker/ribbon cable problem, and for whatever reason they sent me a cable back, that I was definitely not expecting. Lucky me, I now have a spare. They sell for $60 here in Canada.

Mine lasted 31 months. Looking closer, there are very slight deformations under the sleeving for about 300mm, obviously where it twists and bends above my head, and around my neck when looking around.

Looks like the internal wiring has been moving out of position inside the sheath and made itself some stress risers, leading to eventual conductor parting. So looks like a steady degradation since new.

Also on second pair of headphones, originals replaced under warranty when the conductor in the small wire by the driver ball pivot broke internally.

I am on my third facial interface.

I also tried the Oculus earbuds, but did not like them. Very hard to get a good seal and decent sound. Maybe they needed breaking in, but the sound was very dull.

I estimate this is with 1200 hrs of use. Headset itself is still going strong, although I am starting to suspect the rear leds. Need to check them with my phone.

I lose vertical tracking at times when looking over my shoulder for more than a couple of seconds and wonder if some of the leds have failed.

Hoping it and the new cable will last till gen 2 comes out.

Yep that's how they go, sure is expensive, I actually bought a spare Rift on sale I ended up with another 2 sensors and hand controllers and a new face interface and cable and a HMD and a pair of ear speakers for a good price, but yeah the individual item cost's are not so palatable.

You know your addicted when,.. Looking at you dburne. :D

It would also have been good to be able to replace the interconnect that causes either speaker or LED to dropout as well. I have one going back to Oculus just now.

Control is an illusion which usually shatters at the least expected moment.

Gazelle Mini-gun version is endorphins with rotors. See above.

I use a clip to provide strain relief when I use my Rift. I don't like the fact that the heavy video/audio cable is hanging off of the HMD. Even if it is routed through the back. So I use a clip and clip the cable to my left shoulder.
