Yeti42 Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 So I was in a training mission last night at around 10,000 in my Hog and all of a sudden, "boom"... now the mission designer assured me there were only SA18's in the area and armour, I did get an "L" warning intermittently on my RWR (Lazer) so was this a Russian tank? or was it an Igla being fired at extreme range, no missile warning and at 11,000 I've never been fired at by an Igla before. The question is what are Tanks AA capabilities? I've searched the forum and can't find anything, unfortunately, the Tacview track isn't helpful as it contained no ground units... Well, what did the mission log at the debriefing screen say? That should have answered your question? Or watching the replay should answer that too. I've never been fired at by a tank cannon in the A-10 though, and have never been lasered at more than maybe 3,000ft. I'm pretty sure it was an IR SAM (SA-18 Igla). LooseSeal Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 You may have been at 10,000 according to the barometric, but perhaps less in relation to the ground and there was enough for the Igla to have a pop at you? That's what I'm thinking. I've definitely made that mistake before of being way too complacent about baro altitudes, completely forgetting about the 2 or 3,000 feet of land between me and the sea... haha. I've only ever been hit by a tank cannon while in a helo and doing fairly low speeds. - i7-7700k - 32GB DDR4 2400Mhz - GTX 1080 8GB - Installed on SSD - TM Warthog DCS Modules - A-10C; M-2000C; AV8B; F/A-18C; Ka-50; FC-3; UH-1H; F-5E; Mi-8; F-14; Persian Gulf; NTTR
Tippis Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 Tanks, probably not unless you had set your QFE to absolute vacuum. Now, a BMP, on the other hand… :P Those suckers are deadlier than SA-10:s ❧ ❧ Inside you are two wolves. One cannot land; the other shoots friendlies. You are a Goon. ❧ ❧
Cik Posted February 15, 2019 Posted February 15, 2019 tanks won't fire cannons at fixed wings, and if you are over 1,000 ft vertical on him he won't fire his machine gun either AFAIK. there's a time lag on MWS triggers relative to the launch time of SA-18, i would expect it would be that unless you were flying over relatively high hills (in which case it could be BTR-80/BMP-3) keep in mind that the enemy doesn't measure range by barometric. if you think there are SHORAD units in the area you should be either at treetops or at 15,000+ as if you are in a midband altitude you are a big target that will get little or no warning unless you are looking directly at the smoke trail when it appears.
