My son just got a Gear VR Headset with his Galaxy S9. I am considering a Samsung Odyssey VR Headset. How can I test what DCS F/A-18c would look like in VR, but with my son's Gear VR headset? In other words, can I simulate DCS with the Gear VR just to see what VR looks like?

Probably not.

We have a whole VR subforum here where this should go.

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

Not sure what you mean by "simulate".

If you hook up your VR, select the appropriate check boxes in the settings menu, then when you log out and back in to DCS, DCS should automatically recognize the VR. From then, its all done in the VR headset.

VR forum might provide more insight.

Harlikwin, I would appreciate it if you tell me where the forum is located. Also, let me be clear; I do not want to play DCS on the Gear VR, but rather see what it looks like. Perhaps a Youtube video of DCS with VR visual capabilities.

You could try Vridge/ riftcat. It converts your phone into a virtual VR headset.

See here..https://riftcat.com/vridge

They provide an app so you can use the Gear VR too. Performance is not the best, but you will get a good idea.

Hope this helps

Having tried this, it's...at best...a taste of it. And a poor one.

No positional head tracking, constant stutters, graphical artifacts, etc.

(Completely different once I got my Oculus)

You're right.. you wouldn't want to fly with it, but ok to see what it looks like as per the OP. especially as its free for 5 mins. To be fair I was amazed how smooth the head tracking is on the latest version with my S8, so S9 probably as good. USB tethering best too if you can get a lead in. Also allows an external source for positional head tracking which helps a lot.

You can find a pile of DCS VR vids on youtube, but they all totally miss what VR is like.

Upsides:

Immersion. You are in the plane... There is no explaining this, the experience is nothing like flying on a flat screen even with track ir.

3D, you have actual depth perception, one of my first flights I was like, damn that UFC is right in your face.

Amazing 1:1 head tracking... Way better than trying to use trackIR

Downside:

Resolution/SDE... The youtube vids will look way better than what you actually see in a VR headset due to the FOV/resolution issue. A 1080p monitor from 2-3 feet away has a much much higher pixels per degree vision (PPD) than the same headset with a 100 degree FOV. You monitor is maybe the central 20-30 degrees of your main vision. In VR you have 100 degree's and usually about 1080p per eye (but they are overlapped). Look for Screen door effect (SDE) or "through the lens" VR videos to try to get a feel for it.

Goto Best buy (check the schedule for VR demos) or other brick and mortar and see if you can try one on (even if its not the one you want) to get a better idea what to expect.

Gear VR on my samsung 7 wasn't too far off from my Rift from what I remember, but its been 2-3 years since I used the GearVR. Its probably best to think of it as poor-mans VR, most of the computer based VR will be better in terms of image quality and resolution. The oddesey plus is supposedly nearly SDE free, but its still lacking resolution, Pimax also has minimal SDE. The other issue is you need a top end machine for the best performance with DCS though I manage on my low end machine.
