AFAIK - no. You can make him a separate flight and just role-play a wingman. Don't expect to get orders though ;)

Yes, the flight lead is aircraft 1 of a flight of up to 4 aircraft. You can set the "Player" skill to any of them - i.e. you can be No. 2 and No. 1 can be AI.

 

But what draconus said is also true - don't expect much from the AI, especially as flight lead. They may follow the route set in the ME and do all the tasks that are set for the waypoints, but communication is probably veeeeery limited from their side.

Yes, it's good for formation practice though. Add a Advanced Waypoint 'Formation'.

Player's aircraft skill needs to be set to "Client", only number 1 can be set to "Player".

That's correct. Just tested. It basically makes it multiplayer mission (have to choose the slot before flight) but nevertheless you can fly with AI as a leader this way. Thx, I didn't know it was possible.
