testudine2002 Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 I'm trying to understand the difference between BVR and LRS modes in the F-15C. I believe that BVR is for anything beyond 10 miles. Practically speaking, I guess this would be used to launch a 120 in the hopes it goes pitbull and hits a target; like a hail mary? Can someone confirm this is what this mode is used for? Also, what would LRS be used for? Is this just the mode we get defaulted to when we choose RWS on the radar? I seem to understand boresight mode and vertical scan mode just fine. Thanks for this info.
draconus Posted March 9, 2019 Posted March 9, 2019 Let's put the names into use. BVR is Beyond the Visual Range so it speaks for itself - it's the range where you cannot see your opponent with your eyes. RWS is Range While Scan, BVR mode of the radar, basically the same as LRS - Long Range Scan. Now, the difference is if you lock the target or not. If not - the missile will flight on it's own searching for targets (pitbull). If locked - it will follow the locked target using your radar deflections or it's own active later on. feefifofum Posted March 11, 2019 Posted March 11, 2019 (edited) Range While Search, not Range While Scan. Just FYI. A launch without lock is called maddog, not pitbull. When launched with lock, it will not follow your RADAR reflections like a SARH missile, but rather receive initial data and course corrections based on information from your aircraft RADAR before turning on its own for terminal guidance. It is still possible for the internal RADAR to acquire the incorrect target if multiple aircraft are in close proximity to each other, so don't think it's a magic bullet if you're dealing with a furball. With guidance from your own RADAR and in ideal conditions (head on, high closure rate, high altitude, minimal defensive maneuvers) the AIM-120 is capable of reaching targets well beyond 30 nautical miles away. I learn that on mision 7, I thought it was a bug at the begining :pilotfly:

Must've been drunk. I don't know where I got that SARH part from. Thanks for corrections.
