Hi!

I just read that Falcon BMS offers a workaround by using a VR headset displaying a 2D environment:

Setup

If you are using Vive, you may skip to step 3

1. Download and install Steam.

2. Configure SteamVR for Oculus Rift. So Your Oculus acts as a Vive :-p https://www.roadtovr.com/how-to-use-oculus-rift-with-steamvr-play-games-install-support-non-vr-games-desktop-theather-mode/

3. Purchase Virtual Desktop ($15) http://store.steampowered.com/app/382110/Virtual_Desktop/

4. Download and install OpenTrack - https://github.com/opentrack/opentrack/releases

5. Run OpenTrack and select "Valve SteamVR" as input and "FreeTrack 2.0 Enhanced" as output

6. Run the game and enjoy :)

Could this work with DCS and provide a fps boost due to not having to render 3D?

Just brainstorming here...

And yesy I know, it's only 2D, but that doesnt matter to me as I cant see 3D due to lack of stereoscopic sight and still feel very immersed (is that a word?) in DCS with my VR googles :)

I've tried to get it to work that way, and even managed to get it running at one point, its worlds behind actual DCS VR, no way would I use it as a viable solution when real VR is available.

New hotness: I7 9700k 4.8ghz, 32gb ddr4, 2080ti, :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, HP Reverb (formermly CV1)

Old-N-busted: i7 4720HQ ~3.5GHZ, +32GB DDR3 + Nvidia GTX980m (4GB VRAM) :joystick: TM Warthog. TrackIR, Rift CV1 (yes really).

You made it work in DCS or in BMS?

BMS. It worked but no 3d effect meant that it was like using a low res trackir. Not immersive at all.

Still, i would like to know if it's possible to run the Odyssey+ in 2D in DCS.

I got Virtual Desktop and OpenTrack... Any idea? Basically it would have the headset displaying the same picture on both lenses, so no 3D effect and maybe (MAYBE!) creating an fps boost.

Help me on the technical side and I will try it out for you :)

I tried this some times ago with vorpx....the fps was locked at 45 (don’t know why but in 2d my rig is quite capable) but te readability was excellent (much better then in real vr) and 1by1 tracking with opentrack was there....if the fps could be the same as in the monitor it could be a nice alternative

I didnt think it was more readable in VR for bms.

Concerned with the horsepower required to run the pimax for flight sims I did a small bit of experimenting a while back with interesting results. To me, a significant portion of the immersion of a 3d HMD doesn't come from the fact that we are looking at 2 different computed and rendered images with each eye.

I personally believe the immersion is more of a combination of the the Fresnel lens, perfect 1 to 1 head tracking, and the shifting geometry of a single 3d image as you move your head laterally.

I made a makeshift temporary headset a while back with a 11" monitor, Fresnel sheet plastic magnifier, track IR, and a hard hat. In a dark room it immediately had an 3d feel like the rift. The feel of immersion increased dramatically when I moved my head laterally, however I felt sick when I tried to look around because the image was nowhere in sync. I got busy with a new project and my wife wanted her tablet computer back, and I forgot about it.

If you want the feel of it, just close 1 eye in your VR and you will see what I mean.

I currently have my local electronics rep sourcing a curved or flexible 10" to 13" hi res panel. By curving the Fresnel lens and the panel, I believe it will reduce some of the aberrations.

So basically when I finish my current project, I am going to experiment with a single high resolution display located 6" away from your eyes and a single sheet or duel goggle style Fresnel lens looking at a single 3d image.

The obvious advantage would be resolution, and frame rates equal to a monitor with a slightly reduced 3d effect of objects close to you.

Just sharing,

Miles

I agree, that's why I would like to try what I asked for.

But as I also said, due to my lack of stereoscopic vision, the ressources needed for producing a 3D picture in the headset are a waste for me. Just like paying for a 3D movie :D

So I want the headset to basically act like TrackIR.

In a BMS thread somewhere, a guy used the current usual workaround with OpenTrack and Virtual Desktop to use 2D in VR with great fps, then he used TriDef and that cost him ~40% fps.

I found this quote regarding the same idea for Asetto Corsa:

Running a duplicate view on both eyes seemed to gain between 20-30% performance boost in real terms when I tested it with AC and other stuff back with the dk1 and DK2

Therefor I expect more OR at least more stable fps in DCS too. 20-30% sounds good in my book...

Go ahead and try it, I'm just sayin for when I did it in BMS it was really subpar compared to DCS...

Also, we get 50% boost soon for VR according to Wags.

What did I miss Harlikwin, is it Vulkan?

Ah, I got it,

Were you using the O+?

How did you disable 2D?

How come the readabilty is even better than in "regular" VR?

Sounds interesting so far...

Yes I have the O+.

I did not disable 2d.

The readability was much better don’t know why.

But i had not any aliasing

My dream would be an HMD with a bubble-shaped screen and some kind of lens to have a huge horizontal and vertical fov like in real life, but I think it will take at least 15/20 years

Ah, I got it,

Yeah I wish it was Vulkan. But a 50% boost due to terrain engine opimization is pretty good.
