There's quite a bit of throttle range BEFORE the afterburner detent that can be used ;)

The Tomcat has so much thrust that it can even push against the sound barrier without afterburners, and pushing against it costs a lot of fuel.

And btw, Stingers LOVE afterburners. They create a big juicy heat source to lock on to ;)

This ^^

Just had a flight that was 1 hour and 40 minutes approximately, and I still had 4000 left when I shut her down on the tarmac (yeah I know, shame on me, should be on the carrier deck). Had 4 PH, 2 SP and 2 SW plus the tanks that I emptied on the takeoff climb right away. Just dropped 2 PHs to help them decommission two of their aging 95s roughly half an hour after TO. Flew mostly at 36-42kft, FF around 3200 per hour on each engine. Just increased the power in turns. Speed was around .8 - .85, AoA at ~8.5 units where that little caret is at.

Stingers and such are no problem if you're just fast enough. Stay above .8 or 10kft alt and they don't even shoot... I think it even works at .75 already, but I'd rather not risk that.
