According to the fighter pilot podcast episode 012 (Aircraft Carriers Pt2) 32m:38s, the night launch ready signal was to turn on all of the exterior lights, since a salute from the pilot wouldn't necessarily be visible to the deck crew.

Yep. Turning the lights on on a carrier deck signaled Brake Failure to the crew, and they would attempt to throw chocks, chains and small Ordnancemen under the wheels. Pilots would look for something inexpensive to run into. Like an F18...
