grant977 Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 Just want to make sure I’m on the right page. In the Caucuses map the ships heading is 270. With the mag variation of +6 the brc will be 264, with a final bearing of 255. Correct? For case 3 do I dial in BRC or Final bearing for the course in the HSI? Thank You
Ramsay Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 (edited) In the Caucuses map the ships heading is 270. With the mag variation of +6 the brc will be 264, with a final bearing of 255. Correct? Correct, however the F-14B compass will be off approx. 10° so you'll fly 245°M +/- 5° when flying the 255°M FB radial. AFAIK the compass error is intended and HB are modelling a magnetic effect from the carrier or similar. For case 3 do I dial in BRC or Final bearing for the course in the HSI? For Case 3 you'll fly the FB from approx. 12 NM out. Donut Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 Take a look at the following thread that discusses the magnetic effect from the carrier... https://forums.eagle.ru/showthread.php?t=238390 i5 7600K @4.8GHz | 1080 Ti | 32GB 3200MHz | SSD | DCS SETTINGS | "COCKPIT"
grant977 Posted April 23, 2019 Author Posted April 23, 2019 Ok thank you guys. I forgot about the carrier mag effect to now it makes more since.
Eldur Posted April 23, 2019 Posted April 23, 2019 AFAIK the compass error is intended and HB are modelling a magnetic effect from the carrier or similar. I've yet to understand that whole thing completely... my F-14B compass is off by 5-10° already after a simple 30° AoB turn for 90° (lagging behind, so I always oversteer) and takes 1 or 2 minutes to stabilize to the actual heading, no carrier involved. Before reading that thread mentioned, I thought the airframe just wouldn't fly straight (checking for asymmetic thrust, rudders actually being centered and things) since I always had to roll a bit to stay on course. But actually this feels like an instrument instead of magics like in all the other modules. Remembers me of the hand compasses I had as a child for playing outside that pointed everywhere, except for north actually. You just looked at them and their needles would spin around already. Totally reliable if you ask me
