ZoomBoy27 Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 I'm setting up a pre-dawn attack with my Su-25Ts on the outskirts of a town crawling with infantry that have Igla manpads. Can my planes be acquired by Iglas in real life at night? In the game? Thanks. 159th_Viper Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Can my planes be acquired by Iglas in real life at night? In the game? In real Life - Yes. The new Igla-S is Night-Vision capable and the older systems If I interpreted the Info correctly are capable of being made Night-Vision capable. Link to Article In the game - no idea. Will Check and let U know :) Edit: In-Game - Yes. Just got splashed at 01h00 by an Igla Novice or Veteran looking for an alternative MP career? Weta43 Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 They're infra-red seekers - they aquire the target by the heat of it's engines & the engines are still hot at night :-) in fact these probably stand out better against a dark (cold) night sky than a warm day one. Human's might need NVG's to get a bearing & generaly aim to line the seeker up, but the AI seem to have eaten a lot of carrots. Cheers.
ZoomBoy27 Posted August 29, 2007 Author Posted August 29, 2007 Thanks a lot guys ZoomBoy My Flight Sims Page - Link to My Blog - Sims and Things - DCS Stuff++ - Up-to-Speed Guides to the old Lockon A10A and Su-25T - Some missions [needs update]
Mechanist Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Unfortunetly the AI is the same night or day... In IRL you stand a chance against a fast attack plane with an Igla or Stringer only if you have radio communication with other AD or other units such as radars or other MANPADS, observers, etc... At night this is much harder because you don't either see or hear the planes until it is too late... And too late I mean they drop they bombs at the target you're suppose to protect. (as most of you forget AD units are not for shooting planes down but for protecting key targets) Just think about it: you in a town with your Igla at night. There is three possible conditions: The first you are drunk the second you are tired the third your chat with you buddies because nothing happens and it is boring. And if you don't got some information about the attacking plane you have no idea what will be happen this night. You can't see or hear a thing then suddenly you hear a loud engine sound then some bombs, you sober/wake up and starting look around but you can't see nothing you can only hear the engines. You don't know where exactly they are, and because the low speed of sound and the reflection of the sound they are not there where you hear them. So at night you don't got too much chance against fast planes, and they will be not that stupid to stay at the target zone more than 10-20 seconds or drop flares. "Fighters make movies, bombers make history."
tflash Posted August 29, 2007 Posted August 29, 2007 Somewhat OT, but related: someone already tested how many Igla's an igla shooter can shoot in Lockon? IRL I think a rogue element would expand one, two at the most, no? [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
ZoomBoy27 Posted August 29, 2007 Author Posted August 29, 2007 I'll just make up some story about night-vision goggles and a shipment of Ballz energy drinks. As Iglas are part of the ground threats that the Ka-50 is facing, they should think of tweaking that in BS. DOT range thingy calculation.
