Raven1606688515
I've had the Cat for a couple of weeks now and been working on Case 1 landings on carriers. I started watching videos of landings and listening to what the people were saying. I would catch all wires, but mainly 1 and 4 wires. So, I decided to READ about the Case 1 landings. So, after reading about it. I decided to jump in the Cat and try it again. My first attempt was a 3 wire. I went Hmmm!!! My second attempt was a 3 wire. I went Hmmmm!!! My third attempt was a 3 wire. I went Hmmmmmmmmmm! Time to go to bed before I mess this up again. LOL!! Having a blast with this bird. Got a long ways to go learning the pattern and staying in the groove better, like Mav's says "Living the Dream". A little reading never hurts either!!! Banzaiib
I would imagine he read about setting up the overhead break properly so getting into the groove is not so hard... or he figured out ICLS :)
Voyager
So what are the right steps for setting up the overhead break?
Greyhound11
setting up the break is easy, downwind, getting on speed, and heading into the approach turn is where things get interesting
Raven1606688515
That is correct. Setting up the break and getting on speed and staying at AGL coming into the groove. I was always having a hard time keeping AGL when getting on AOA, then maintaining AGL coming into the groove. Always to low, making me go past the carrier to much to get on AOA. Still learning every flight!! It should be ASL!! All landings were made manually. Chaogen
Well when at sea, ASL = AGL, unless of course you're on the carrier, but I'm sure that's within the margin of error.
Milopapa
Coming from a newbie, these were the biggest learnings for me while practicing Case I recoveries: Use the fuel flow indicator to hit the right throttle setting Trim the pitch when dirtied up then control your AoA and descent rate using only the throttle (mostly) Don't be afraid to make big changes on the throttle momentarily - simply nudging it will make it very slow to react Watch your final turn rate using the VDI - needs to be a lot shallower than you'd use instinctively Drop the throttle a LOT when you come level for the start otherwise you'll go high in a blink The wires are a lot more forward on the deck than they seem, trust the ball I have to say, both Maverick's video and Victory's guide helped me a ton, as well as watching some IRL videos (encouraging me to make more aggressive corrections on both throttle and stick). :joystick: I'd also recommend the NATOPS manual for general understanding of what everything does in the cockpit - it's great we can use real life manuals! Eldur
setting up the break is easy, downwind, getting on speed, and heading into the approach turn is where things get interesting Well, it's exactly the other way round. If I come in from bow to stern, about 1.2nmish abreast, the whole thing is piece of cake. But if I have to do the break beforehoof, the whole thing just goes haywire because I never hit the spot and my whole approach turn is messed up by it's totally messed up initial point... And I've yet to come across a good read that tells me how to do the break...
Raven1606688515
How do you get Victory's guide? I see it, but was told he took it down. If anyone could send it to me it would greatly appreciated. Larkis
Why does he put it down? Also i like landing the cat. I use autothrottle to go onspeed, after the groove i set up the glidepath and do adjustments only with the DLC Slats. Its easy to hold the ball centered and catch a 2- or 3-wire.
