Just saw it on the news then,

maybe Kuky did too.

Anyhow, late this arvo I could hear these circling aircraft, but I couldn't see them anywhere. Had to be some fighter, definitely wasn't civil by the nose level.

Anyways, my suspicions were confirmed!! Two F/A-18's were scrambled to intercept a light aircraft that had entered restricted APEC Airspace 4 hours after it's scheduled takeoff.

Warning flares were fired, and the two jets couldn't get a radio response. But they escorted him to land immediately and it was found that the flight had been approved.

If i was the pilot i would Sh** scared :noexpression:

heh, funny you mention me but yeah, I just saw it on the news too. A cesna took off late from Bankstown airport (small civilian airport some 30km from Sydney city) and headed into this restricted airspace due to APEC... two F/A-18's scrambelled but... I find it very strange I only saw them carrying 3 fuel tanks and maybe they had 2 AIM-9's on the wingtips but I could not see any ordenance on them... at least what was shown on the news futage.

PC specs:

All the defence $$$ earmarked for few AIM9s, was instead reallocated to the cops and their water cannon truck which, given that APEC is over, will now be used to as a dust gathering device. :)

Seriously though, they'd never have fired a missile (or any other weapon) on a small GA aircraft.

Well they said Cesna took off from Banstown airport.. if they lied I lied :D

Anyway, the F/A-18's were said to have droped flares. I assume to draw attention of the Cesna pilot... but now when I think about it I wonde why they didn't use radio to contact him... surely the ground control would be able to talk to the pilot.. who knows what really happened... maybe the scramble was just a show off :D

I don't know what kind of footage was shown . . . . possibly stock rather than live?

In any case, an M61 will make a big enough mess of a Cessna without having to resort to missiles . . . .

yeah true... guns would definitely do :D but then again they wouldn't need 2 F/A-18's either ;) ...I had a thought too the footage shown was not from today, so who knows...

Maybe they dropped flares just for the case that people in the Cessna brought a stinger or two :D

Never forget that World War III was not Cold for most of us.

The flares are a standard agreed upon signal for getting a pilot's attention - it is an international thing. There's a document describing emergency aviation/intercept procedures for such cases.

The document title is:

DoD FLIGHT INFORMATION PUBLICATION (ENROUTE)

FLIGHT INFORMATION HANDBOOK

Im pretty sure it was shown from today, as i could hear the jets in the distance.

Had no idea what was going on except that I could hear small planes with big engines flying to the west. Suspicions confirmed in the night :)

I don't think they would have used guns either. It would be too politically delicate to shoot down an aircraft without absolute certainly it was a terrorist. Esepcially since it would likely have been right over the harbour/city for all to view. What if it turned out to be a father with his new PPL and children for a joyflight, but with a broken radio - or with his radio tuned to wrong freq (easy to do)?

I suppose they don´t even have to use guns, engine wash is enought ;)

Does a f18 flying near you really have to use flares to make itself noticeable ? Don´t think def people are able to get a flight licence... how would they taxi to take off?:D

And yeah shooting a cessna for bad radio isn´t good for popularity, especially with elections drawing themselves on the horizon.

The only ones known to do that and take pride on it are cubans.
