Nealius Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 I've been flying the F-5 out of Lar AB recently and noticed some very strange TACAN signal behavior. Tuning to Kish, 112X, I get a good signal when I have mountains between me and the TACAN, yet when I'm above the mountains the TACAN signal disappears. It's like the line-of-sight logic is reversed. On the ramp at Lar I get a good TACAN from Kish....71nm away with a large mountain range between Lar and Kish. Passing through ~1,500' AGL (in relation to Lar field elev.) the signal suddenly vanishes. Passing through ~9,400' AGL (in relation to Lar field elev.) the signal suddenly returns. And here's a shot of me deep inside a canyon, with a good TACAN signal traveling through the left canyon wall, apparently. I don't know how line-of-sight is coded, so at this point I don't know if it's a global issue, an F-5 issue, or a PG issue.
Raven (Elysian Angel) Posted July 13, 2019 Posted July 13, 2019 I noticed the same in the F-14... Nealius Posted July 13, 2019 Author Posted July 13, 2019 Have you guys experienced it on different maps tuned to different TACAN stations? I'm wondering if it's global or something peculiar to PG (or specifically Kish).
