8000ft for landing

4000ft-5000ft for T/O (heavy)

 

You clearly need Swedish aircraft for those small shabby fields that have not been vacuumed before landing ;)

 

AJ 37 Viggen:

 

Takeoff distance: 400 m (1312 ft)

Landing distance: 450 m (1476 ft)

 

JAS 39 Gripen:

 

Takeoff distance: 500 m (1,640 ft)

Landing distance: 600 m (1,969 ft)

 

A rather impressive movie of a JAS 39 landing on a small road in Finland during an exercise in 2015. Six conscripts in a tent next to the road get it loaded and back in the air after 10 minutes...

Yeah, but they were purpose-built for this :)

Norwegian F-16s with drag chutes can probably do better than their US counterparts.

Back in the days, ie. until around 2000 the Norwegian F-16s practiced short field ops every year. Usually from Stokmarknes, Skagen airport in Lofoten. Runway length just under 900m. The only other regular traffic was Twin Otters and GA. Loudouts needless to say was light, usually just the centerline tank and a pair of sidewinders I believe.

I've heard early deployment of the drag chute was a common procedure.

That looks sick! I didn't know that was a thing! Must be potentially very unhealthy.

The Norwegian Vipers still operate from relatively short runways, heavy maintenance is still carried out at Kjeller outside of Oslo, where the runway length is about 1300m.

I have no idea how that doesn't code 3 the jet, usually you pull to idle and the jet sinks...let alone an instant chute shock deceleration with a little altitude to go...those crew chiefs must have a well stocked bar!
