Raven_Morpheus Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 Hey all It's been a while since I've dabbled with installing RAM... My PC has 8gb of DDR3 RAM, in 2 sticks of 4gb, at (according to CPU-Z) a DRAM frequency of 1066.5 mhz, can't recall what brand. My motherboard is an Asus Z97-P. I'd like to put in a 16gb set of DDR3 PC3-12800 RAM, this for example - https://www.ebuyer.com/408828-patriot-16gb-black-mamba-ddr3-1600mhz-pv316g160c9k Can I just plug the new RAM into the 2 remaining slots on my Asus Z97-P and fire up my computer with out doing anything else? Thanks in advance for any help on this.
razo+r Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 It is advisable that your RAM stick are all from the same type with the same capacity. Mixing them could cause some troubles. https://www.google.com/search?q=ram+with+different+capacity&rlz=1C1MSIM_enCH859CH859&oq=ram+with+different+cap&aqs=chrome.1.69i57j0.9179j1j7&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
Demon_ Posted August 4, 2019 Posted August 4, 2019 They must run at the same voltage. They will run at the frequency and timing of the slower one. Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
Raven_Morpheus Posted August 4, 2019 Author Posted August 4, 2019 (edited) Ah right. So even if I install just the new 16gb I'm guessing I'll have to adjust voltages and timings in my BIOS? Edited August 4, 2019 by Raven_Morpheus

Raven_Morpheus Posted August 5, 2019 Author Posted August 5, 2019 (edited) Ok, well apparently what I've got installed currently is 2x Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 4GB 2133mhz, according to the invoice I just dug up. So if I get DDR3 2133mhz RAM that'd be a drop in fit, right? Edited August 5, 2019 by Raven_Morpheus
VampireNZ Posted August 5, 2019 Posted August 5, 2019 Yep that will do fine - always check your motherboard specs and see what is the best RAM that it supports is. 4 x DIMM, Max. 32GB, DDR3 3200(O.C.)/3100(O.C.)/3000(O.C.)/2933(O.C.)/2800(O.C.)/2666(O.C.)/2600(O.C.)/2400(O.C.)/2250(O.C.)/2200(O.C.)/2133(O.C.)/2000(O.C.)/1866(O.C.)/1600/1333 MHz Non-ECC, Un-buffered Memory * Dual Channel Memory Architecture Supports Intel® Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) You could go for 32GB DDR3 3200Mhz XMP pair, with the lowest C latency figure you can afford. https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/Z97P/specifications/ Vampire
Raven_Morpheus Posted August 5, 2019 Author Posted August 5, 2019 (edited) 32gb is outside my budget. I'm considering buying just a set of 8gb 2133mhz (i.e 2x 4GB) and sticking it in the 2 spare slots on the Asus Z97-P, I'm guessing that would work also? Certainly would be a less expensive option for me. Edited August 5, 2019 by Raven_Morpheus
BitMaster Posted August 6, 2019 Posted August 6, 2019 my post above was ...ehhh. ...not correct. The 1066 threw me off despite I should and must know better. Download CPU-Z, it's free, and check what latency your ram has. Then go and buy the same spec RAM, that means also 2133MHz with the same primary timings, which indicates latency. If you need to buy tighter timings, aka better latency, it wont actually run on those but slow down to your existing modules' latency. So dont waste money on tighter timings. Look if you can buy them somewhere where you can possibly return them if things dont work out, there is a chance you need that option, Gigabyte Aorus X570S Master - Ryzen 5900X - Gskill 64GB 3200/CL14@3600/CL14 - Sapphire Nitro+ 7800XT - 4x Samsung 980Pro 1TB - 1x Samsung 870 Evo 1TB - 1x SanDisc 120GB SSD - Heatkiller IV - MoRa3-360LT@9x120mm Noctua F12 - Corsair AXi-1200 - TiR5-Pro - Warthog Hotas - Saitek Combat Pedals - Asus XG27ACG QHD 180Hz - Corsair K70 RGB Pro - Win11 Pro/Linux - Phanteks Evolv-X
