ebabil Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 My rig is; 2600k 4.2 16 gb ddr3 ram gtx1070 If you look at the attached pic, my cpu is working at %20-40 ish load But my 1070gtx is generally at 100%. Since my cpu is very very old, i want to upgrade it to 9600k or r5 3600 Does it worth? or should i replace my gpu? My cpu doesn't seem to cause bottleneck. xoxen Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 Hi ebabil, when I see the numbers correct the GPU is actually the limiting factor. Mine also was at 99% and upgrading from a GTX 1070 to a GTX 1080Ti brought a 25% increase of the FPS. The GPU is still at 99% but I´m running a very high resolution of 7680x1440 so I´m not wondering about it. Even though your CPU is quite old I believe a GPU upgrade brings more benefit. By the way, how much FPS do you want to get? 79 is already very good. A screenshot of your settings would be great to see. Yurgon Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 My rig is; 2600k 4.2 16 gb ddr3 ram gtx1070 Well, what is it that you want to improve? FPS? Stuttering? Tearing? In some cases, just hitting ALT+Enter after you're in the pit will give you a decent boost because it pushes DCS to true fullscreen mode. My old rig was very similar to your current one; same CPU but not OC'd, 24 GB DDR3, 1070ti. I kept the GFX card but went for the new Ryzen 3600X, together with new MoBo and 32 GB DDR4. The new rig is great, and with some tweaking and a few changed options, DCS looks completely fantastic now. But I'm not sure if I couldn't have achieved the same result on the old computer. Anyway, according to your screenshot, the i7 does a great job (hell, your base speed is 400 MHz above my brand new, but not OC'd, CPU). An additional 8 or 16 GB of RAM might help a fair bit. But with the 1070 at the edge, going for a new video card seems to be the most logical step. With the mining boom more or less behind us, maybe looking for a 2nd hand 1080ti might give your system a big boost for small money.
Demon_ Posted August 8, 2019 Posted August 8, 2019 What is your goal? Your already at 79 FPS. Overclock the CPU and get a bigger video card. Attache ta tuque avec d'la broche.
Yurgon Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 Overclock the CPU ... His 2600K is at 4.2 GHz, meaning it's already OC'd by 800 MHz :smartass:
ebabil Posted August 9, 2019 Author Posted August 9, 2019 The fps in the pic can be deceptive, this was taken o a mp server in tomcat pit on a carrier deck in the sea. Fps changes 120 to 35 from open ocean to crowded conflict areas. But in any case cpu usage doesn't reach 100% , not even close. Gpu is always working at its limits. I am very confused, a ten year old cpu but still challenging to the world lol I bought a new case , 16 gb 3200 mhz ram and cpu cooler. But can't decide to buy a cpu and mobo. Maybe i should sell ram and cooler and buy a second hand 1080 ti.. Canadus Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 Same thing here; made some testing with my system and realized, that 1070 is running on 100% and cpu at aprox. 3/4 of its capacity. Have just ordered a new case to improve my airflow and cooling and will then follow the discussions regarding ryzen vs intel & will then decide to upgrade my cpu. GPU will follow later then. I would go for new cpu first, then GPU. 16Gig of RAM should be sufficient, imho. Ryzen 5800XD - 32GB RAM - Sapphire RX 7900 XTX - VKB Stuff + MFG Crosswind Pedals Homebase: Southwest Germany
Yurgon Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 [...] and will then follow the discussions regarding ryzen vs intel & will then decide to upgrade my cpu. What discussion? Intel is getting buried right now. :D But seriously, they're even starting to lose market shares in the server segment because AMD is getting better there, too. Right now is a golden age. AMD desktop CPUs are, IMO, superior over Intel while less expensive. Plus Intel is fighting with yet another security flaw (not that AMD doesn't have any - but no one knows about them yet, and if we get really lucky, they won't be discovered until we've all upgraded beyond this generation of CPUs ;)). 16Gig of RAM should be sufficient, imho. I've been following the RAM discussion for a long while. I was on 16 GB until about a year ago, when I add another 8 GB to a total of 24. I think DCS ran better on 24, though I never really benchmarked it. If it's possible to get a cheap upgrade from 16 to 24, it might be worth a try. On a new system, 32 GB for DCS seems the way to go, unless on a really tight budget.
Canadus Posted August 9, 2019 Posted August 9, 2019 In SP, my 16Gig were sufficient so far & never really utilized fully. No MP so far, so I can't comment on that. Though I've been pro Intel so far, I'm really ready to give AMD a chance. Good bang for the buck I would say. My new case has arrived today, so tomorrow will be refurbish-time. Will think about CPU upgrade very soon. I'm not so sure, which GPU I should go for. 2070 Super, 2080, or keeping my 1070 for some time and wait a bit... :music_whistling: Ryzen 5800XD - 32GB RAM - Sapphire RX 7900 XTX - VKB Stuff + MFG Crosswind Pedals Homebase: Southwest Germany
BitMaster Posted August 10, 2019 Posted August 10, 2019 For example, if you fly the Quick Start FA-18 Bomber/Fighter Mission on the PG map ( in german that mission is called "Jagdbomber", no idea what it is in your language ), my used RAM climbs up to 23-24GB after a few minutes. I dont know if it runs just as smooth on 16GB, all I know with 32GB there is no stutter or delay anywhere. 16GB is not future proof. ebabil Posted August 10, 2019 Author Posted August 10, 2019 In Nevada, i get different results.
