Hi

I would like to ask if it is possible to have maybe a slider in the special options of each module with which it is possible to set the default FOV for the respective module. I noticed that each module can have a different FOV and therefore, depth perception, distance, model size and speed is very differently seen among the modules because of the difference in the FOV. For example the carrier appears to be much farther away in the tomcat, compared to the hornet at the same exact distance.

Of course i could zoom ingame but resetting the FOV brings me back to the default one and i have to adjust it again. I believe that this could be a helpful tool, yet no cheat as it is anyway possible to set the FOV manually but annoying.

I know that it is possible already with each module with some LUA magic but this apparently breaks the integrity check, hence no multi player.

Thanks for having a look.

Just turn on save user snap views under options. On by default.

(Pause Trackir)

Move yourself and or FOV with / and * on Number Pad.

Then save it by holding RAlt and hitting Num0. This will then be your NEW default position and FOV zoom when you reset.

See it on video

Check FOV size by Holding Left Ctrol and hit Pause twice.

Keys to use when setting up the view:

"Num/ - RCtrl - RShift" Cockpit Camera Move Back

"Num5" Cockpit Camera Move Center

"Num2 - RCtrl - RShift" Cockpit Camera Move Down

"Num* - RCtrl - RShift" Cockpit Camera Move Forward

"Num8 - RCtrl - RShift" Cockpit Camera Move Up

"Num8" Turn Cockpit Camera Up

"Num2" Turn Cockpit Camera Down

"Num/" FOV- aka Zoom-in

"Num*" FOV+ aka Zoom-out

"NumEnter" Default FOV aka Zoom

As seen in this thread for setting up all the snap views.

I wish people would quit compounding DCS's error by calling the zoom function "FOV". If you don't know what the definition of FOV is...shut up. All you do is make it impossible to actually get DCS to program a FOV option into the programming.

and how should ED in a "Flight Simulator" exactly be doing it RackMonkey?

You sound like the expert here.

Here's one where the developer has modified the FOV with a modification to Unreal Engine source code.

"FoV is probably the setting that most of the FPS players out there are familiar with: it controls how much you actually see on your monitor and it has an impact on how the players perceive the distance, size, and speed."

"The solution to all of these issues, i.e. locking the FOV for the gun and player model to a constant value while retaining variable FoV for anything else, is pretty simple on paper and much more complex in reality. It took us some time to get it right."

http://www.theastronauts.com/2019/04/the-secrets-of-fov/

"We’re modifying the FoV during the game, decreasing it when you aim down sights, which creates the zoom effect, and slightly increasing it while you sprint and dash to give you that feeling of moving quickly."

(I know about snap views, but it's a pretty uncomfortable way of doing this)

I disagree.

FOV is the horizontal and vertical view angle, it is a function of focal length which is natural in a lens and simulated in DCS.

In other words, when focal length increases your view angle decreases.

ZOOM, from wikipedia :

Zoom lenses are a special case wherein the focal length, and hence angle of view, of the lens can be altered mechanically without removing the lens from the camera.

In other words, when focal length increases your view angle decreases. :smilewink:

...tell me what is the difference then.

If you don't know how to politely and decently discuss on a public forum, then...well.. you gave the suggestion what to do already :smilewink:

That said, you can rest assured that i know exactly what the definition of FOV is, thank you. However, if you are unable or unwilling to trust in the explainations of several people, then i highly encourage you to try it yourself. Ingame, press RCTR+RSHIFT+pause twice to enable an overlay with additional screen information. Then zoom, you will notice that the FOV is changing. Even if you are nitpicky about your definition of FOV, the zoom is injectively related to FOV.

Zoom View in this sim is the same thing as FOV in an FPS game except you can adjust it on the fly. Otherwise it does exactly the same thing. Some FPS games like ARMA have a zoom view.

What most people are asking for and what’s needed, is the ability to set the max FOV to a certain limit. The default wide FOV in DCS is too wide for single monitors, it seems designed for triple screens. It looks awkward and fisheyed on a single screen. You can limit it in the .lua but many time a server or mission setting will override that.

If you’re using an axis for zoom you can limit it in the response menu.

A simple setting for this in the graphics options is a must.
