DD_Fenrir Posted September 11, 2019 Posted September 11, 2019 There is still some fleshing out required to AAA; particularly regards the Allies who have no heavy gun types where as the Germans have 3 different variants of ostensibly the same gun! 90mm M1A1/M2 https://www.quartermastersection.com/american/artillery/229/90mmM1A1 Used in Normandy: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/184th_AAA_Battalion_(United_States) QF 3.7-inch AA gun https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QF_3.7-inch_AA_gun Germans are lacking an intermediate gun: 3.7 cm Flak 18/36/37/43 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3.7_cm_Flak_18/36/37/43 Finally, mobile versions of the light/intermediate types are absent from the Assets Pack: http://www.kfzderwehrmacht.de/Homepage_english/Motor_Vehicles/Germany/Demag/le__Zgkw__1t/Sd__Kfz__10-5/sd__kfz__10-5.html http://www.tanks-encyclopedia.com/ww2/nazi_germany/sd-kfz-7-1 http://www.kfzderwehrmacht.de/Hauptseite_deutsch/Kraftfahrzeuge/Deutschland/Bussing-NAG/m__Zgkw__5t/Sd__Kfz__6-2/sd__kfz__6-2.html http://www.kfzderwehrmacht.de/Homepage_english/Motor_Vehicles/Germany/Krauss-Maffei/m__Zgkw__8t/Sd__Kfz__7-2/sd__kfz__7-2.html https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M16_Multiple_Gun_Motor_Carriage
Snapage Posted September 12, 2019 Posted September 12, 2019 I think the allies lack good AA in general. The bofors are not very good at shooting fighters so its easy for the germans to vulch allied air fields. They really need short range AA like quad .50 or 20mm cannons.
Yoda967 Posted September 13, 2019 Posted September 13, 2019 (edited) Was reading recently that Allied ground formations rarely contained heavy AAA, and significantly less light/medium AAA than German formations because by June '44, the Luftwaffe was not much of a threat to them, so much of it having been withdrawn for defense of the Fatherland. That said, 3.7cm Flak guns and the SdKfz 7/1 ans /2 would be welcome additions to the DCS battlefield. DD_Fenrir Posted September 13, 2019 Author Posted September 13, 2019 Was reading recently that Allied ground formations rarely contained heavy AAA, and significantly less light/medium AAA than German formations because by June '44, the Luftwaffe was not much of a threat to them, so much of it having been withdrawn for defense of the Fatherland. Agreed in principle, however, rarely is not never; as linked above at least one US Battalion of heavy guns was sent to Normandy to protect the beaches and then Cherbourg Port. As such there were Allied heavy guns in theatre - however small in numbers - and as such are a defence system that should be available to WW2 mission builders. That said, 3.7cm Flak guns and the SdKfz 7/1 ans /2 would be welcome additions to the DCS battlefield. They would certainly allow more flexibility to Mission Designers and I'd hope to see them soon. Regards the Bofors; there certainly seems to be a big mis-match in capability and lethality between the German AAA and the Bofors currently. Whether this is due simply to the bofors lower rate of fire combined with a common aiming logic that benefits the German weapons is beyond anyone but EDs knowledge. It could I suppose be argued that the German AAA gunners had much greater opportunity to practise their craft thanks to the quantiitive mis-match between the Luftwaffe and the Allies, plus the more defensive nature of the Lufwaffe in the later years of the war did not see them roam over Allied territory very often, but still...
