Fri13 Posted November 3, 2019 Posted November 3, 2019 (edited) And what does the topic title ask? That is the Rift S a "beta product" from Oculus or not? That is there reason to install Oculus software Beta version or not? That is there reason to use DCS Open Beta with Rift S? That __________? Edit: What I can say, the Rift S is currently best VR system one can buy what comes to the features, requirements, usability and price. It is a solid kit that doesn't require almost anything to be done to get it working flawlessly. By the specs it ain't the best out there, but it is best when it comes "just works" with the current PC hardware etc. Sure if someone wants higher resolution they need to look elsewhere, but then "what works great" it is possible with Rift S. For the hardware requirements, it is hard to beat Rift S for its delivery of the quality and performance. For its price, again very hard to beat as you have lower hardware requirements for PC as well. For user friendliness and usefulness for overall VR, very difficult to beat. The Rift S is excellent upgrade from CV1, from almost anything and to reason to buy it instead anything else if one wants a very solid VR experience in DCS (and other titles). I do not see big problems with previous versions, but not big benefits either on the most expensive and specification vise competitors. Oculus managed to make a very excellent product that doesn't look at all as such by looking the specifications, but it works great in use. Sure there is lots to wait from CV2, but before that we need to get a lot of other things right and it can take 2 years from everyone else. And to go for Beta in Oculus software.... Go... dburne Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 (edited) Yes if referring to the Public Test Channel, I have had that option ticked in my Oculus software for some time now. I enjoy getting the newest software version even if it is in testing, rather than waiting on those gradual rollouts of the release version. Typically I have found the PTC to be pretty solid. Just be aware there can be bugs as it is in the public testing phase at that point. If referring to the actual hardware itself, it had some teething problems early on but is a pretty solid device now. Been using mine daily for the most part since May, and loving it. I do use earbuds though in my Rift S and a desktop USB mic, I found the audio strap to not be up to what I want, and the mic on mine had a lot of dropouts. Lange_666 Posted November 4, 2019 Author Posted November 4, 2019 (edited) And what does the topic title ask? I meant software wise. PS: It is a solid kit that doesn't require almost anything to be done to get it working flawlessly. When it works i must says it's good (can't compare since it's my first and didn't try anything else). Hardware wise i have a connection (i would rather say a communication problem). Every time the PC boots or comes out of sleep i have to reconnect the USB to get it going again (i'm not the only one who suffers from this, looked around and the only definitive solution seems to be a PCI USB board so i have one on order). It shows connected, it sees the controllers but there is no full communication between the PC and the Rift-S. If i pull the USB plug, everything goes grey and only then it give a not connected message. I already tried the Beta if this would solve it (you never know if you don't try) but it didn't. So my question for using the beta software was more to ask around if it was stable or not to leave it installed. Lange_666 Posted November 4, 2019 Author Posted November 4, 2019 Thanks for the info (the Beta was just a trial, you'll never know what you gonna get). I already ordered a Startech one but with only 2 USB ports, not 4. I know how to install/uninstall other chipset drivers, did this in the past a couple of times, but that doesn't always mean the new ones get installed properly afterwarts. Sometimes the Windows ones can be pretty sticky. Win11 Pro 64-bit, Ryzen 5800X3D, Corsair H115i, Gigabyte X570S UD, EVGA 3080Ti XC3 Ultra 12GB, 64 GB DDR4 G.Skill 3600. Bob_Bushman Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 If you have problems on stable. Try the beta. If you have problems on the Beta, revert back to stable. If it's working just fine, well no need to fix what's not broken. Through the summer and such there was a few very annoying bugs still in the Rift S stable that was released early in the Beta but for the last couple of months there has been only minor differences in the two. i7 8700k @ 4.7, 32GB 2900Mhz, 1080ti, CV1 Virpil MT-50\Delta, MFG Crosswind, Warthog Throttle, Virptil Mongoost-50 throttle.
Fri13 Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 Don't know what reason someone is to be on the public beta version on hardware, unless there is something special that can be tested or otherwise usable, like if suddenly the hand tracking would appear in Rift S and DCS would support it.... i7-8700k, 32GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 2x 2080S SLI 8GB, Oculus Rift S. i7-8700k, 16GB 2666Mhz DDR4, 1080Ti 11GB, 27" 4K, 65" HDR 4K.

When Oculus is updating the smoothing algorithms, tracking algorithms, or doing any changes to the software features, those changes arrive on the beta channel first. At one point they also fixed static flashes on Rift S, that too landed on the beta.
