NaCH Posted November 3, 2019 Posted November 3, 2019 (edited) Hey HB. This is what Fortinero found odd last day we were practicing and it seems like a bug. Situation: F14Blue vs F14red 1- F14 Blue master arm on and select AIM9M 2- PAL radar on, lock F14RED in front. no matter the aspect. 3- F14 RED confirm lock in RWR. 4- F14 blue has f14 red locked and see diamond a cross over the airframe. 5- F14 Blue hit PLM button, un lock STT. 6- F14 Red confirms in RWR that lock is no longer detected 7- F14 blue still sees the diamond and cross follow the target. Hope it makes sense. Regards. Edited November 9, 2019 by IronMike

Top Jockey Posted November 5, 2019 Posted November 5, 2019 The cross I would suspect is correct due to TCS lock maintained (or if TCS lock is maintained), the diamond seems wrong, but I am not sure atm, I need to ask. Thank you for reporting it. Hello, Allow me a small correction - as I believe everything is working as it should: (The bolds are for highlighting purposes.) When AIM-9 selected, contrary to Radar-guided missiles, the HUD symbology meaning DOES change as in real life: - the cross symbol now represents AIM-9 Seekerhead lock... instead of TCS lock; - the diamond symbol therefore now represents TCS lock also... instead of just Radar lock alone; - so, when loosing a Radar lock, only the range and closure scales disappear from the HUD. If that is the logic, if the target goes outside the hud and then back the diamonds disappear but the cross still on target. Does this mean that the TCS can only track in the hud viewing angles?
Top Jockey Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 If that is the logic, if the target goes outside the hud and then back the diamonds disappear but the cross still on target. Does this mean that the TCS can only track in the hud viewing angles? The TCS lock symbol for that situation - which changes depending on the weapon selected, disappears probably because the target got outside of the TCS gimbal limits, and so you lost the lock. The cross still on target, maybe because its representing the AIM-9 seeker head and its gimbal limits are bigger than TCS. I would recommend you to search in the manual, as I believe it also mentions the TCS gimbal limits. Naquaii Posted November 7, 2019 Posted November 7, 2019 The behaviour is correct. As been mentioned the reticle (cross) represents the AIM-9 seekerhead line of sight while the diamond represents sensor line of sight. If STT is present that is the diamond, if not the diamond represents the TCS if that is present. The reason for the reticle remaining after having the target outside of the HUD is likely, as been said here, that the TCS is limited to ~15 degrees off boresight while the AIM-9M, being a SEAM capable Sidewinder can track out to 40 degrees.
